Carol R. Witherell, 85, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 in a local nursing home. She was born in Northampton, MA on January 17, 1931 to the late Ernest and Pearl (Church) Witherell. She was raised in Westhampton and was a 1948 graduate of Northampton High School. She received her Bachelor of Science and Education and Masters in Education from Westfield State College. She taught in South Hadley Schools for 3 years and was a teacher in the Westfield School District for 37 years and retired from Highland Elementary school in 1992. Carol was a member of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts, Chi Chapter-Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the Western Hampden Historical Society and Retired State County and Municipal Employees of Massachusetts. She leaves several cousins in the area. The funeral for Carol will be held on December 15th at 11 am in the First Congregational Church, 18 Broad Street, Westfield. The burial will be held in the spring in Westhampton Center Cemetery. Calling hours are omitted. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 170 Pearl Street, Springfield, MA 01101 or to the First Congregational Church, 18 Broad Street, Westfield, MA 01085

Ms. Witherell was a fantastic first grade teacher. I credit her with giving my children, along with other faculty members at Highland School, the finest primary education you could ask for.
