Carole St. Jacques Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 16, 2011.
GILFORD - Carole St. Jacques (Howe), 73, died at her home on June 14, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was cared for and comforted in the final stages of her life by family, friends and the wonderful caregivers and nurses of Hospice.

Raised in Meredith, Carole was the seventh of eight children born to Oliver and Mildred (Sawyer) Howe.

She graduated from Inter-Lakes High School where she played girls' basketball.

In 1959, Carole married her beloved husband, Kenneth, and enjoyed 50 years together before his death in 2010. They lived most of their lives in the Lakes Region. After a brief retirement in Florida where she played golf and enjoyed the sunshine, she and Ken moved back to New Hampshire to be near family and friends.

Family was the most important aspect of Carole's life. She was always proud and supportive of her children, Torrie Whitcher and Ernie St. Jacques of Gilford. Carole had a special place in her heart for her cherished granddaughter, Bristol Whitcher, who brought such joy to her life.

Carole had a lifelong passion for gardening. She not only grew her own vegetables and berries, but made pickles and jams that she generously shared with family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and shared her talent by donating hundreds of caps to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital and other charities. Additionally, Carole enjoyed cross stitch and quilting and made many heirloom pieces for those closest to her.

The simple things in life made Carole the most happy. Bingo with friends, Sunday drives around the Lake and quiet family dinners were some of her favorites. She also enjoyed her regular trips to Las Vegas with her husband, her children or her girlfriends. The slot machines and buffet would always put a smile on her face.

Carole's kind heart and generous spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Torrie & Ernie, (June 2020)
I will never forget the kindness of your Mom & Dad. Your Mom hired me to Babysit at age 14 when my parents owned the Hi-Spot, just down the road from you. Your Dad, later hired me at Aavid Engineering just before we were starting our own family. My husband, Jeff knew them both also. We often reminisce about the Boulevard Drive-In...your hard working Mom, Dad & his Mom and how wonderful you kids were. Although we were saddened to hear your parents were selling the Boulevard Drive-In, we were glad that your deserving parents would now have time to spend with the two of you. We live in Gilford now but always think of your family when we pass the old place on the Weirs Boulevard. It was never the same with the new owners! My parents owned Hi-Spot for 43 years & would often speak of how they missed the Boulevard Drive-In when your parents owned it, especially on a busy Saturday when they had no time to prepare a good meal! My sincere sympathy during the loss of your mother. I was only 14 when she hired me as your "summer" sitter. She & your Dad worked such long hours at the Boulevard Drive-In...so I would come over around 10 AM and work until around 11 PM when they closed. Your Mom would always come over & check to see how we were doing and fed us well. These were wonderful years for me as Mom would allow you both to come to Hi-Spot...down the road a bit (where I lived) and take you swimming. Your folks were certainly terrific people and will always be amongst my happiest working memories!

A special part of my childhood... Aunt Carole and Uncle Ken brought me into my teens some 60 years ago by teaching me a good work ethic and showing me how to be responsible. I cherish those memories as I always have. I wish you Tori and Ernie an easy time of dealing with this loss knowing that your Mom & Dad are now together in a place of peace and no suffering. Such wonderful memories. God Bless.

Some of my fondest memories are sitting and just talking to Auntie. Loved to hear her laugh.

Torrie, Ernie and Bristol, please know that Carole and your families are in our thoughts and prayers. Carole was such a special lady and Ross and I have had the privilege of knowing both Carole and Ken. We loved them so. I will never forget the day Carole taught me to cross stitch. I was so scared as I don't have much in the "craft" talent. She was so patient. Then, of course, she 'got me hooked'. Every time I stitch, I think of her and will continue - always.
