She attended Latin High School in Boston, Mass and went on to receive her BA in Psychology from Keen State College in Keene, New Hampshire and her Masters in Counseling from The College of New Jersey. Carolyn settled herself in Toms River, NJ in 1978 where she devoted herself to making a positive difference to the lives of women and young teens suffering from addictions. As her career blossomed Carolyn pioneered the A.S.A.P. program development and implementation in the Toms River School System. My dear, sweet Carolyn- from the time I was 15, you were a kind, loving, non-judgmental figure in my life. Our relationship evolved as I got older, however those things always remained the same- that and your door was always open, no matter what. I thought of you just the other day, and then your picture showed up in my email. I think it’s a sign that you are still here, supporting all of us still. Love and miss you, my friend. XO

I loved seeing my dear old friend's picture in the corner of this Guest Book.
I want her to be walking in my door with her usual "hi" and laughter. A more than 70 year friendship cannot be destroyed by death. My memories are rich and many.

Love always for her and for her family.

Intelligence, resilience and spirit are three qualities that immediately come to mind when I think of Carolyn. In addition, Carolyn's love of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren was a model of emotional warmth and consistency. I know she overcame insurmountable odds in her early years and I personally admire her character-will to move forward from those years. She healed her broken heart only to guide the way for others to heal their hearts. As a mentor and a friend to me I wish her family my sincerest empathy. Her leadership guides me to this day.

Carolyn Hadge was a loving, compassionate soul that touched the lives of so many. She was quirky, funny and like no one else I have ever met. She was my Addictions Counseling Professor and then became my friend and I will miss her dearly and our phone chats. She was a professor to my daughter India as well, who has only fond memories of her.

I feel blessed to have been taught by this amazing and compassionate woman. She reeled me into this career path with her wondrous ways. It is sad to see such a beautiful life come to a close, but I know her soul and her name will forever live on in the lives and hearts of those she touched. My condolences go out to her family. Death has taken the best. But then again, death is only a doorway to something new. And I'm sure she's blazing through it like the spitfire she is.

Words cannot express the sadness I feel for the loss of one of the most giving and loving women I have ever met. I met Carolyn over 25 years ago, as a young teen in her new ASAP program at the high school. She was someone who was somehow always there, day or night. I have been blessed to call her first my counselor, then my friend. You will be greatly missed, Carolyn. Thank you for being such a positive influenece in my life. I love you.

As I read the guest book I am not surprised to find how many people's lives Carolyn touched nor how many lives she has saved. She came to live with me and helped take care of me when I needed her. We have been friends for 70 years - how many stories are there to tell, how many Christmas gifts, so beautifully wrapped, have I opened, how much laughter have we shared? It's time to say goodbye but I'll hold her in my heart always.

The last time I saw you was at the Center for Alcohol Studies - you were advocating for Children as always. You talked about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects, challenging us to look and talk about something that so many of us want to avoid talking about. You were always a champion... a leader... I don't think you asked to be one, I think you couldn't help yourself - if you saw something that needed doing, you did it! That's what's so remarkable to me. You stepped up to lead so many of us, through your personal life and stories, your professional work and your advocacy because it was the right thing to do.
God bless you, he's already blessed so many of us whose lives you touched.

I had the privilege and honor to be one of Carolyn's students at OCC. I loved attending her classes because you never knew what was going to come out of her mouth next! She was incredibly vivacious, intelligent, and warm-hearted. Even though she may be gone, her spirit lives on in her students and colleagues in the field. She was a true inspiration and will be missed greatly.

Zsanelle Hakspiel

March 24, 2011

Well, I was hoping to attend the services but I will not be able to. I will do best to express what I loved about Carolyn. My name is Zsanelle Karina Hakspiel, and I met Carolyn Hadge about a year ago in my job. I learned so much from her in a short period of time and there are not many individuals that make that sort of an impact in such a short period. She had so much charisma and passion and loved the field. She was always trying to find creative ways to guide students in the right direction. The more I spoke to her the more I admired that drive, perhaps it was the fact that she never appeared to let the field jade her , she seemed to remember what her goals were and what led her to the field of addiction. I am sure we all recognize this as well. My condolences to her friends and family. She will be missed.
