Carolyn Heuberger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2017.
Carolyn Josephine (McConnell) Heuberger passed away in the comfort of her home on March 6, 2017.

Born on Nov 29th 1935 in Lima, Ohio, the McConnell family moved to Chicago and Long Island before settling in Denver, Colorado, where Carolyn met and married her husband Hans Peet Heuberger.

Carolyn was an internationally acclaimed sculptor and abstract impressionistic artist. Her formal art education started in 1953 at Colorado College and continued on to the Chicago Art Institute. In 1956, she became a flight attendant with United Airlines. It was during this tenure that she began studying art with the Chicago Art Institute. Additional education followed with workshops and tours of art centers in France, Italy, Spain, Zurich and Berne Switzerland. She was known as Carolyn Cole, using her Mother's Maiden name for her art. Carolyn's paintings grace the walls of galleries, private collections and corporate offices throughout the United States and Europe. Music was a large part of her life and

inspired her art. She would often put music on and

spontaneously painted what came to her. She never had a preconceived notion of what she was going to paint. She painted very freely and her main goal with her art was to evoke emotion and happiness in the people who enjoyed it.

Carolyn was a loyal advocate for animal rights. She served on the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and contributed to animal welfare causes throughout her life. She helped out many charitable organizations. Her heart was very generous. She was also an accomplished equestrian. Competing in the dressage circuit with her horse Chancey, winning numerous awards in the Denver area.

Her genuine warmth touched the lives of everyone she met, and was affectionately known as 'Mom' wherever she went. She believed in treating everybody equal and was a huge equal rights advocate. She was very intelligent and honest and not afraid to speak out about what she believed in. She loved watching CNN and talking about local and national politics as well as business. Carolyn was also a huge Denver Broncos fan! You could always find her in her favorite red chair, dressed in her Broncos jersey and waving her pom poms for every game. She also loved to laugh! We will never forget the endless stories about her and her brothers pranking each

other as children and well into adulthood. They remained very close in life, talking to each other every night.

Carolyn is survived by her Husband, Peet Heuberger, 2

Children, Gunnar Heuberger (Sherri), Heather Heuberger both of Colorado Springs, 3 Grandchildren, Skyler Short (Kim) , Savanna Guffy (Marshall) , Joshua Eberly, 2 Great-Grandchildren Jackson Guffy and Mason Guffy, all of Colorado Springs. Her brothers, Wright McConnell of Polson, Montana, and Michael McConnell of Denver, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hellen and Wilbur McConnell.

In lieu of flowers, the Heuberger family suggests donations to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak region.

Dearest Peet, Heather and Gunnar, Carolyn treated every soul she met with dignity and respect. She absolutely radiated sincerity and warmth. Her gorgeous eyes were direct and reached into your heart with genuine caring. How I loved talking cats and dogs with her, seeing her face beaming with love for all creatures. I am forever grateful to both her and Peet for enabling Colorado Springs to become my new home all those years ago. I treasured her then as I do now in sadness, she truly lives in my heart forever. I was so blessed to have this family in my life.

I met Mr. Peet Heuberger years ago when I worked in the book department at MediaPlay. He shared with me his first experiences of racism in Texas. He brought his wife Carolyn in and I was so moved with how friendly they both were. I looked forward to seeing them in the story and I never got much done because I was so busy talking to them. I remember one day Mrs. Heuberger brought her granddaughters in and introduced them to me. I told them how wonderful their grandparents were and to listen to the stories that they had to share. I left MediaPlay in 2000 and I always wondered how they were doing. This was a life well lived and I will always cherish the time we spent talking in books. My condolences to the family she was an impressive person.

To the Heuberger family. So sorry to hear of your loss. I really didn't know Carolyn but the Heuberger family had such an impact on our little neighborhood on the hill. Dad thought so highly of all of you and that continued with support of our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you for all the memories, laughs, guidance, and inspiration throughout the years. I am truly honored to call you "Mom" and to be accepted into your amazing family. The "Comedy Corner" (as you referred to it) will not be the same, without your laughter. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten or replaced.
