Carolyn McCarthy, former U.S. Representative from New York, died June 26, 2025, at her home in Fort Myers, Florida, at the age of 81.
She ran for Congress in 1996, after her husband Dennis was one of six people murdered in a mass shooting on New York's Long Island Rail Road.
McCarthy is remembered as a passionate advocate for what she called common-sense gun control measures. She served nine terms in Congress.
Her former colleague, Congresswoman Betty McCollum of Minnesota, paid tribute to McCarthy on social media upon her passing: "She was able to channel the immense pain of her own tragedy of gun violence into being a force who made our families & communities safer."
