Carolyn Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2025.
Carolyn Williams Thompson, age 86, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, passed away on July 28, 2025, surrounded by love.

Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Carolyn was the daughter of Edwin and Jean. She met her beloved husband, James (Jim), at Brown University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Botany. She later completed a Master's of Education at Cornell University and went on to teach elementary school.

Carolyn had a deep and abiding love for the natural world. From an early age, she was drawn to flowers, birds, and dogs - a passion that stayed with her throughout her life. She married Jim in 1963, beginning a marriage rooted in shared curiosity, kindness, and devotion.

She was a loving and supportive mother to Jed (Brenda) and Lydia (Grant), and a proud grandmother to Rachel, Daniel, and Joshua. Her greatest joys came from time spent with her family, and she nurtured lasting connections with a close circle of dear friends.

Carolyn's heart was rooted in two places - her longtime home in Grosse Pointe Woods, where she was an active member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, and her cherished cottage on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. She first came to the cottage as a child and returned each summer throughout her life. She took deep pride in creating a peaceful and welcoming space there - planting expansive gardens and making sure everyone had what they needed to rest, recharge, and feel cared for. The cottage wasn't just her favorite place, it was the place where she most loved doing for others. She and Jim were especially active in the St. Andrew's Church in Howdenvale - a small summer church where even dogs are welcome at services.

Carolyn's generosity showed up in quiet, consistent ways. She gave neighbors rides, checked in on friends, and made everyone feel seen. In her later years, as mobility became more difficult, she stayed deeply connected by phone, spending hours each day listening with genuine interest to the daily ups and downs of friends and family.

She always wanted to be helpful, offering a listening ear without judgment and a steady presence that brought comfort. She will be deeply missed.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her children and grandchildren, who will carry her love and legacy forward.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Carolyn's favorite organizations:

Shiva will take place on Monday, August 11 from 6-8pm, (with minyan service at 7:30 pm), at Jed and Brenda's home.

A remembrance of Carolyn will take place on Sunday, September 28 during the 10am service at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. Reception to follow.

Tomorrow, September 28, 2025, would have been the celebration of Carolyn's
87th birthday. Instead, we shall be celebrating her life in music, word, and prayer. I will try to be there, in Spirit.
There is so much about her life to celebrate! AND to miss.

Carolyn Williams Thompson and I first met in our freshman dorm at Pembroke College in Brown University in 1956 when we were dorm-mates across the hall. Our friendship expanded to include two others, Sally Richardson Allan and Francelia Mason Clark. We continued as a foursome throughout college. What we had in common was a love of being in the outdoors, and the joy we found in singing together, to the accompaniment of Sally's tenor ukulele and her sweet soprano voice. That friendship has endured to this day. But sadly, we are now bereft of Carolyn's presence. Through the years Carolyn was our most regular correspondent, and phone caller. When we all turned 80 we gathered at Carolyn's home, where she had recruited a musical youth from the neighborhood to lead us in singing some of our old favorites. Though Sally could not make it, we tried to bring the mini-reunion to her. Carolyn was ALWAYS solicitous of others, and thought of creative ways to gift them. When my own hearing got so bad I had to keep asking her to repeat herself, she offered to buy me my first hearing aids. When I was ordained to ministry as a second career, she and her husband Jim put together a wonderful, very personal, traveling communion kit. I have missed her deeply already. But it was just like Carolyn to leave this world without calling attention to herself. Her wonderful extended family is a tribute to her and Jim and the guidance and examples they set. May she rest in peace, knowing how much she was loved! Greta Reed

Lydia & Grant, Jed & Brenda,

My heart is saddened at the news of the death of Carolyn. I have so many lovely memories of both her and Jim when our paths would cross on the Bruce Peninsula. The summer I was doing my parish internship at St. Andrew´s Memorial gave me a great deal of time to get to know her and her love of nature, love of critters - especially dogs and her love for her family.

Thank you for sharing your mother with me and countless others over the years. She was a remarkable woman who raised a remarkable family.

Rest eternal grant unto her O Lord and may light perpetual shine upon her. May her soul and the sounds of all the departed rest in peace.

Affectionately,
Sue McCullough+

It was wonderful to have known Carolyn. When I worked at St. Michaels in earlier years she was always helping stuffing bulletins, helping with the annual report and any other way she could. When I talked to her on the phone she always wanted to know how myself & my family we're doing. It was nice to read the obituary and remember about the cottage that she and Jim loved and about her pets and everything else she liked to talk about. Especially her kids and grandchildren. and nice to always see her newsletter with her photos, especially the flowers and garden grown at The cottage! One good thing isI am glad she is now with Jim and all her other loved ones.

Carolyn was a treasure. She was the driving force behind our little knitting group. All the things about her that were described in the obituary I found to be true, so very concerned and interested in others. She remembered everything I told her and asked about it the next time I saw her. She was also very generous with her yarn and so appreciative of my help with her knitting. She was so kind. I will miss her.
