Cassius MacDiarmid Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune from Jan. 2 to Jan. 3, 2018.
Cassius "Cash"' Rogers MacDiarmid, 87, of Hinsdale passed away peacefully at home on December 29. Born in Chicago to Dr. Leslie F. and Ann E. MacDiarmid, he was a resident of Hinsdale for more than 50 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sheila (nee Hartney), three daughters, Ann MacDiarmid (James Farah) and Nellie (Eddie) McCarthy of Hinsdale and Mary MacDiarmid (Tom Anderson) of Chicago and five beloved granddaughters, Mary Frances, Belle and Colleen McCarthy and Elizabeth and Olivia Farah as well as many nieces and nephews. Cash loved building homes ("I never worked a day in my life") during his 50+ year career. He and Sheila started the 4th of July Food Pantry Float for Hinsdale Community Service and he loved volunteering at Hinsdale Hospital. He also was active in Hinsdale Center for the Arts, Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce and The Community House. As the longest running attendee at cardiac rehab, he also created the Thursday Evening Board Meeting. The consummate entertainer, Cash loved hosting parties and playing the piano. He always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and a kind word for anyone and everyone. Also faithful friend and avid dog lover but his real passion was his family. His proudest accomplishment was his three daughters. A memorial mass on friday January 5th 2:30pm at St. John of the Cross, 5005 South Wolf Road, Western Springs, IL 60558 will be followed by an open house from 4:00-8:00 p.m at LaGrange Country Club, 620 S Brainard Ave, La Grange, IL 60525. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to HCS Family Services, 19 East Chicago Ave, Hinsdale, Illinois 60521. Arrangements by Brian Powell Funeral Directors of Hinsdale. I was just getting re-acquainted with Cash last month when he began coming to my class, Sit and Get Fit, with his daughter Nellie. They were both enjoying the class; Cash always thanked me when the class was over and said he would be back. I could tell there was a wonderful bond between him and Nellie. I will keep his entire family in my prayers.
Sincerely,

Cash was one of my true heroes. Being around him made you want to be a better person, to be more kind and more empathetic to all people, and to give 1000 percent in all we do in life. I cannot say enough about how he and Sheila helped me and my family through my battle with Leukemia and in ensuring that no matter what happened everything will work out. His sense of humor even after Nellie and a bunch of us would be caught as kids doing crazy kid stuff was commendable. Even the big Red X made from permanent marker on Maggies paw brought a smile to his face; like he somehow knew that x was a stamp of admission to a party at the MacDiramid house ( nope she stayed home from the lake that weekend) lol. Thank you God For allowing us to spend time with an incredible Human being here on earth as it is time for Cash toprovide you with some really good stories and a lot of laughs.

Dear MacDiarmid Family-

I have so many wonderful memories of Cash. He was a true gentleman. As a child, being around him was magical. He made one feel so special. He was funny, high energy, smart, generous, and so considerate. I always felt welcome in your warm and loving home due to Cash and Sheila. You are all in my prayers during such a hard time. His was a life very well led, and he set a positive example for all of us. The Hinsdale community has been beyond lucky for the past 50 years. Love, Julie Johnston

Dear Sheila and Family, January 5, 2018

Coming home from a inspirational day of celebration I pondered what to write about what Cash meant to me. What my wife Pat and I had just experienced will continue to impact us for a long, long time. Today was how all of our days should feel, LOVED. That word inspiration was what he did for me for the last 15 years. We ( all who shared Cash's day ), as well as you and your family will miss him. It is evident that you all feel blessed. We do too. Every day Cash spent on this earth was made better because he made it so. Thank you for sharing this loving man with us all. It is incalculable to measure the size of his footprint on this earth. For my part I will endeavor to BE LIKE CASH and from my observation today I won't be alone. Thank you for providing this special day of celebration and remembrance.
Pat and I will keep Cash and all of you in our prayers. Lots of love always, John and Pat Mika

Cash MacDiarmid was a great friend to my father, Jack Tobin, who sold millwork and windows for the houses Mr. MacDiarmid built. My father loved Mr. MacDiarmid. And all of us Tobin children who worked for our father and met Cash also loved him because Mr. MacDiarmid always remembered our names and treated us with great kindness and respect. What an exemplary human being and great role model. To be treated so graciously by this nice person was a gift. My condolences to the MacDiarmid family. Cash was a true joy to know. Liz Tobin Sodic
