Catherine Bruneau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2011.
Catherine (Kitty) Bruneau
1917 - 2011

Cathy passed away peacefully on July 30th at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home, surrounded by family. She was 94 yrs. old. Cathy was predeceased by her husband Peter (1998), son David (2004) and infant son Peter (1957). Left to cherish her memory are her children Cathy (Wayne), Terry (Guy), Michael (Lois) and Norah. She will also be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Cathy was born April 22, 1917 in Co. Mayo, Ireland, the third of seven children born to Michael and Kate Corrigan. The family moved to North Shields, England where Cathy spent most of her childhood years. During World War II, Cathy met Peter, a Canadian soldier stationed in England and they were married in 1943. Cathy came to Canada in 1946 as a War Bride, with their 2 yr. old daughter Catherine. On arrival they joined Peter and there was a meshing of cultures as Cathy settled in to her new life, as part of the large and boisterous French speaking Bruneau family.

Cathy and Peter lived in Great Falls, Powerview, Thompson and finally Winnipeg. Cathy worked as a Health Care Aid for 20 yrs., retiring from the St. Boniface Hospital at age 70. Cathy loved her work. She was a true caregiver. Her training and experience were helpful to her in caring for Peter in the years following his stroke in 1993.

Cathy will always be remembered for her sense of humour and her love of telling jokes. Her biggest joy was being with her family. The grandchildren will always remember the time spent with Grandma drinking "Irish tea", sharing funny stories and singing silly songs. The annual trip to Tinkertown was a must with Grandma riding the ferris wheel every summer , right up to age 90.

The family would like to thank the many people that helped care for Cathy in recent years - all the caring staff at Meadowood Manor, Ed and Simone Dorge, Rona, Sharon, Delores and Eudora. Your kindness will always be remembered.

Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wed., August 17th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette's Parish, 820 Cottonwood Rd. Fr. Fred Olds presiding, interment to follow at Green Acres Cemetery.
