Catherine Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2015.
NEWPORT NEWS - Catherine "Katie" Clarke Dunn died Thursday morning, Oct. 1. She was born March 25, 1921 in Elizabeth City County, Va. and grew up in Goochland County, Va. She graduated from Goochland High School and White's Commercial College. After finishing school, she moved to Newport News and married Jimmie Dunn on July 13, 1943. They built a life together in Newport News and raised three sons there. In addition to being a wife and mother, Katie also had a successful professional career. She began working as a secretary for C. K. Hutchens at the Newport News Automobile Exchange. She later worked at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company Employees' Credit Union (now BayPort) from 1956 - 1986. She began as a "half-day" employee, working from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. so she could send her boys off to school with a hot breakfast and be there for their return. Known as "Miz Dunn" on the shipyard's waterfront, she worked as a loan officer and "told the Credit Committee what to do," according to credit union sources. We believe she was the first woman to retire from the credit union. She is survived by her three sons, Jay (Mary Lee), Billy (Susanne) and Rob (Banna), five grandchildren and two great grandsons, who all knew her as "Gaga." She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, her brother and sister, her parents, and one grandson. Katie was a charter and active member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church. She loved her church and her ministers. She also loved Oreo cookies, Reese's Cups, Happy Hours, caring for others and being with family and many friends. She will be lovingly remembered for her kindness to all and her servant's heart. The Dunn family would like to thank her "Visiting Angels" for the great care and kindness they have shown Katie during the final years of her life. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Hidenwood Presbyterian Church (414 Hiden Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606). A visitation will take place Monday, Oct. 5 at Peninsula Funeral Home from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow. The burial service will be private. For those attending the funeral, please wear red in celebration of Katie's vibrant, fun-loving and kind spirit. We also ask that you raise your glasses high and have a final toast in her honor.

Katie, it was such a pleasure being your neighbor and getting to know you. You were always so nice and welcoming. I enjoyed keeping in touch through letters even after I moved to Louisiana. I'll miss seeing you.

It's been many years since I heard Katie's name. I was a green senior in high school working "FOR" Katie at the NNSDD Co's Credit Union. She was a wonderful mentor and I learned a lot from her. I am so sorry for the family's loss.

I would like to add from my heart to you her family something I'm sure you all already know but it bears repeating. Katie was and is so proud of each one of you, only now she is cheering you on from the Heavenly realm! {Psalm 115:16...Katie is Home!}. I was with her so many times when one of you called her and I saw her face light up and heard the happiness in her voice at hearing from her family! You were her pride and joy. She was all about family! May God richly bless each and every one of you now and in the days ahead. Psalm 91 is my prayer for you. Thank you for receiving me and entrusting me with her care. She and you are keepsakes in my heart!

Prayers to the family. I will miss that friendly smile and wave from the front porch every time I ride by. Mrs. Dunn was a neighbor from the other end of Pine Grove. She will be missed.

Katie I love you and know Jesus is smiling! You always brought a smile to those who knew you...thank you for receiving me into your home and heart as a Visiting Angel and then as a friend. I came to bless and care for you and you blessed my life in so many ways! I still remember our first meeting on your front porch as you were making up your mind about me...you told me later it wad when I admired your hummingbird wind chimes that you decided I was okay! I still chuckle about that! You taught me to play gin rummy and generously shared your stash of oreo cookies and reeses cups with me! So many many memories and happy smiling remembrances of you and our special friendship. Please stop by and say hello to my Mama, Margaret who got to Heaven before you...I know you two will get on famously. You are forever in my heart dear one-of-a-kind Katie!!!

It would be hard to imagine a more kind and thoughtful person than Mrs. Dunn. There was never a time she wasn't welcoming and gracious not only to me but to everyone. It was a privilege to know her.

My deepest sympathy to the Dunn family. Mrs. Dunn was one of my mother's best friends during the early years of the credit union. Your mom was such a sweet and dear person. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
