CATHERINE LOWDERMILK Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 22, 2013.

GREENSBORO — Catherine "Kay" Lowdermilk, 84, beloved mother and friend, crossed from this earthly sphere Friday, April 19, 2013, at her home, Well Spring Retirement Community, in the company of family and loved ones, to reunite with her husband, Harold Lowdermilk, Sr., who predeceased her.

Visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. Internment will be at Westminster Gardens, Greensboro. Afterwards, visitors are welcome to join the family at the home of Harold and Jill Lowdermilk at 3720 High Rock Road, Gibsonville.

Born on August, 13, 1928, to Rufus and Effie Pearson Bryant, Kay grew up in Sampson County, NC. She married Harold Lowdermilk on December 29, 1948, and they brought four children into the world.

A long-time resident of Greensboro, Kay bequeathed a legacy of love and service to her family, friends, and community.

Kay graduated from Montreat High School and St. Leo's School of Nursing. She served the Greensboro community for nearly 30 years in the nursing field, primarily at Wesley Long Hospital. Kay's intellectual curiosity never ceased. After retiring from nursing, she entered Guilford College, where she was named the Most Outstanding Student in the Psychology Department and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, with double minors in History and Criminal Justice.

Kay's affirmation of Christ's love never ceased. She was raised in the Presbyterian faith, and served faithfully for many years at Bessemer Methodist Church until she and her husband moved to another community and began attending West Market United Methodist Church. There she took instruction and ministered to the church community as a Stephen Minister. Kay also served as a Hospice Volunteer.

Following the death of her husband, Kay moved to the Well Spring Retirement Community, where she enjoyed residing until her passing.

Kay is survived by Catherine Clement, of Kilauea, HI; Syndee and Robert Kraus, of Carrboro; Frann and Tim Sarpolus, of Raleigh; and Harold and Jill Lowdermilk, of Gibsonville. Her grandchildren include Matthew Clement, of Haiku, HI; Haley Conner, of Redding, CA; Pearson Kraus, of Ft. Collins, CO, Hannah Wilkes, of Omaha, NE, Amanda and Evan Lowdermilk of Gibsonville, and Ilana Winchester, of Portland, OR. She is survived by 5 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her grandsons Emmanuel Clement, Jeremy Sarpolus, and Israel Sarpolus.

For her many dear family members, friends, and caregivers: she still holds you close to her heart.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Well Spring Retirement Community Benevolence Fund, 4100 Well Spring Drive, Greensboro.

Family served by Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel.
