Catherine Mullarkey Obituary

Published by East Bay Times on Dec. 16, 2016.
Catherine Mullarkey
Aug. 13, 1984 - Dec. 9, 2016
Brooklyn, NY
Catherine Marie Mullarkey was born in Oakland, California on August 13, 1984 to Tom Mullarkey and Jane Drummond-Mullarkey. She was brought home to Richmond ten days later to join her 20 month old sister Elizabeth, and younger brother Matthew was welcomed 20 months later.
Catherine attended Friends All Around, a co-op preschool in her neighborhood. From there she moved to St. David School in Richmond for grades K-8. Catherine attended St. Mary's College High School in Berkeley, graduating in 2002.
Catherine enjoyed playing many sports throughout her life including CYO softball, basketball, volleyball and WCCYSL soccer in grammar school. This love of sports continued at St. Mary's College High School focusing on soccer and softball and adding a genuine love of running through cross country.
She chose Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, sight unseen. It was there that she met the love of her life, Quincy Myers, the first week of school.
After graduating in 2006, Catherine and Quincy moved together to New Orleans. In 2008 they moved to New York when Quincy was accepted to law school at NYU and they soon settled in Brooklyn. Catherine loved teaching preschool in both New Orleans and New York and went on to earn a master's degree in Early Childhood Education at Hunter College.
Catherine and Quincy were married at Oak Farm Vineyard in Lodi, California in 2013 after eleven years together. She enjoyed traveling and experiencing the sights, the people and the colors of the world, with memorable trips to New Zealand, Japan, Turkey, Indonesia, Spain, Mexico and El Salvador. Catherine was so proud when she qualified for the 2016 New York Marathon, a feat she was not able to fulfill.
In Spring of 2016, Catherine was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. She valiantly battled the disease with determination, grace and courage. She was surrounded by the love and support of family and friends from around the country and blessed with fabulous medical teams at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Catherine departed this world, 32 years old, on December 9, 2016 at 5:07 am, the exact time she arrived.
She leaves behind her loving husband, her parents, her Myers family, her grandparents, her brother and sister, numerous beloved friends, dozens of cousins so close to her, Aunties and Uncles that she adored and her 2 nieces and 2 nephews, with whom she had a very special bond. She will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life for Catherine will be held at St. Mary's College High School, 1294 Albina Ave, Berkeley, CA. on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at 10 am. All who loved Catherine are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Catherine Mullarkey can be made to Sean Casey Animal Rescue, an independent nonprofit helping animals in need in Brooklyn.

While I haven't been in the family for years, I'm deeply saddened and shocked to learn of Catherine's passing.
She was the kindest, sweetest soul one could ever meet (much like the family).
I offer my condolences to you all with fond memories of Catherine.
