Catherine was born June 12, 1929 in Hazelton, PA, daughter of the late James J. and Catherine (Moran) Crossin. She graduated from St. Gabrielle's High School and matriculated to the Hazelton General Hospital School of Nursing. She later worked at Fort Howard VA Hospital in Maryland where she met her future husband, John J. Swalec, Sr., DDS in 1951. Catherine moved to Massachusetts in 1952 and began working at Rutland Heights VA Hospital. She and John married in 1954 and the two spent the next 58 years together until his passing in 2012.

I had the pleasure of helping Catherine out at home a few years back. She was a wonderful woman who loved her children & grandchildren dearly. Always talked about their accomplishments & what good parents they were. Couldn't stop laughing when she told me the story about all of them fitting into the Volkswagen to go to church & the parishioners looking out the window wondering how they all fit in that small car. Rest assure that she's in heaven & at peace. My thoughts & prayers are with you all.
