Cathryn DeVisser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 12 to Apr. 17, 2019.
DeVisser, Cathryn (Ann) 5/11/1955 - 4/8/2019 Mattawan Cathryn (Ann) DeVisser, 63 of Mattawan, lost her valiant battle against breast cancer on April 8, 2019 at Mount Sinai Hospital, Miami, Florida, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Ann was the hallmark of selfless acts, known for a lifetime of putting others before herself. With loving tribute to her husband Ken, and despite immense fatigue, she arranged an April family trip to the Florida Keys to thank him for 42 lovely years of marriage and ferocious dedication to her care while she was ill. Ann was naturally courageous and a determined fighter, whether riding her Harley through blinding rain going to Sturgis, jumping off a sailboat in the Grenadines to swim, downhill ski or trim a sail during a squall. Her zest for life was boundless, her will to live determined. Enthusiastic, energetic, Ann also juggled a full time career first at Bronson Hospital, later at Canney's Water Conditioning with raising her family. Ann was also a goal setter. Obstacles in her path were to be tread upon. She vowed to see her daughter married and her grandson Parker born. Both of which she achieved despite the medical naysayers. With her infectious laugh and sparkling blue eyes, Ann turned strangers into friends. Inclusive, everyone was welcome to share in the greatest gift she made, her family. Sharing emotions came easily for Ann. Anyone that knew her, also knew her husband Ken, was the captain of her heart, and her very best friend. Pushing her wheelchair through the Chicago airport last week, Ken remarked, "This is no big deal, I can do this for years." They were a dedicated team. From a large family, Ann could quell the most tumultuous sibling arguments with her philosophy, "Cut it out! Life is too short!". May her love be a compass that always points us in the right direction. Ann is survived by husband Ken DeVisser of Mattawan, son Dr. Michael DeVisser of Chicago, daughter Lisa (Travis) Thompson of Kalamazoo, and grandson Parker Thompson. Also surviving are her brothers Brian (Patrice) Canney of Portage, Scott Canney of Belleair Beach, FL, Sean Canney of Portage, MI, Kevin (Vicky) Canney of Edwardsburg, sister Mary Jane (Jim) Midgett of Mattawan her brother and sister-in-law Sue (Rich) Harrison of Kalamazoo and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her mother Wanda J. Canney (2017), father Lewis Charles Canney (1984), and brother Terry Jay Canney (1982). Visit with Ann's family and friends on Monday (Apr. 15) from 4-7 pm at the Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive; Kalamazoo (269) 375-2900 where services will be held Tuesday at 11am with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery. Please visit Ann's personal web page at www.BetzlerFuneralHome.com, where you can archive a favorite memory or photo and sign her online guestbook before coming to the funeral home.
