I never knew Cathy, or even spoke with her. I was a junior tennis player in San Diego two age divisions younger than hers when she was playing in the 16s-18s.
I just remember thinking Cathy was the prettiest girl on the courts.

I will always see Cathy in her white tennis dress beautifying court 8.

Gregg,

We are so sorry to hear your news. Cheryl Huber (Rankin) is visiting me here in Phoenix where I live in the winters now and the news even traveled here. You were blessed to have such a wonderful inspirational wife. We remember how both of you worked hard to supply our Whaley students with tennis gear. We hope you can find comfort in the many memories of your union with Cathy. She was inspirational and has touched so many lives. You are a lucky man to have had all that in your life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and please stop and see us in Phoenix sometime.

Gregg,

I'm very saddened by the loss of Cathy. Her warm and mentoring spirit has touched so many over the years. I feel privileged to have been one of her students of tennis and life. She taught me that life as in tennis is a game to be played to the fullest. Always give everything you have and hold your head high. Her love of the game, life, and her students will live on in the hearts she touched. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow.

Cathy was a real role model for my daughter. She offered her a job (her first) and inspired a passion for tennis in her. I will always be grateful to her for that.

The last time I saw Cathy was when she and Gregg were moving from our Alaska to sunnier warmer times in New Mexico. She came up to me with a beautiful roll of exquisite yarn. She said she had become frustrated with the difficult to handle yarn and thought that I might be able to do something with it. I was inspired by her confidence in my ability to "conquer" the difficult yarn and mold it into something. I started the project but put it away for years. Just the other day I took it out of hiding and layed it down by a pillow, intending to get back to finishing the project. Then a day later my daughter called to inform me that Cathy had passed away. I was so shocked as she was someone whom I thought would live to be a 100. I hope she is watching from the spirit world and guiding/inspiring me to finish something just as she inspired so many people in the tennis world. Teenagers especially!

Gregg my deepest and sincerest thoughts are with you. I hope you can move forward and get through this difficult time. I'm sure Cathy is pulling for you too!

Gregg, my sincere condolences to you. I'm so sorry for your loss. Cathy was a great teacher. As you get older you realize one of the most important things an individual can give is their time. She gave me her time, knowledge, and efforts to make me a better tennis player. She worked tirelessly in this pursuit and I only wish I could thank her for this. I stopped playing for many years but recently started again. As I did it was the memories of just the two of us on the court working on the basics. Cathy would be the patient teacher and I was the impatient kid who would get frustrated. I hope that she knew that she was appreciated and her efforts and time spent were valued. As I write these things about Cathy I can say the same thank you to you. You too spent many hours helping an impatient kid learn to be a better thinker on the tennis court. Thanks to both of you.

Gregory~my heart is so filled with grief that is beyond words. When I was given the news that your wife had passed away suddenly, my heart sank within me. It was unbelievable, unimaginable. I never got the chance to meet Cathy, but if she was anything like you, then I can understand why she was so dearly loved by everyone who were so blessed to know her.

Gregg,
My heartfelt thoughts and sympathy are with you in your time of sorrow. Please know that I am praying for you and your family, and honoring the memory of Cathy. Know that I am here to support you during this difficult journey. May your heart and soul find peace and comfort as you carry on the joys of life Cathy so freely brought to you, the boys, and everyone she touched, and those of us who didn't get to spend time with her as we would have liked. We missed out on so, so much.
Love, Nancy

Dear Gregg and family,
I'm terribly sorry about Cathy's death... and I'm very sorry to have missed the memorial gathering at PHCC. I was in El Paso participating in our 3.5 women's league. Cathy would have wanted 'the show to go on'! I'm sure she operated on that principle many a time throughout her career. She will be sorely missed by local tennis women.
My deepest sympathies,
Sally Hunter.

Dear Greg, NIck & Jake - so sorry to hear that Cathy has passed away suddenly. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Cathy was such a great, positive influence on Scott and Ross' tennis. When we came to Australia 7 years ago there was nothing like the program she had set up in Anchorage! We sorely missed her and her team ... we hope you find comfort in all the wonderful messages from the many people whose lives were touched by Cathy.

Gregg, it has been a pleasant chance circumstance to reconnect in Las Cruces with you and Cathy. As you know, many years ago I worked with Cathy in the ASD high school tennis program, and it was great to see that Cathy's love of the game and desire to work with young players was still there, strong as ever in NM. She will be missed, but her teaching spirit will continue to affect many lives. Carol and I are very sorry for your loss.

Gregg:

Virginia and I are so sorry to learn of Cathy's passing. She was a central force in setting up tennis classes for the youth in Anchorage after she arrived and inspired many. With you, she helped to establish professional tennis tournaments for the City for which we thank you.

Our thoughts are with you and the family.

She was the most influential person in my life besides my parents. She was my tennis coach, mentor, friend and truly a person I aspired to be like. I can never decribe what she meant to me and I can only hope she knew the affect she had on my life. All my best to Gregg and Chris and the rest of her family. I was truly blessed to know her.

I was so stunned by the news of Cathy's death, I had to read and then reread the e-mail indicating her passing just to be sure it was real. Cathy was always there when I needed help or advice. She always greeted me with a smile and that boundless energy and enthusiasm she was known for. Her passing leaves a great void in our tennis community that will likely never be filled.

Gregg, Chris and Family,
I am so sadden to hear the news of Cathy passing. She was my inspiration as a child. I longed to be as beautiful and as great of a player as she. Cathy was a warm and exceptional person. I will never forget her for taking her own time and taking me, Tami and Theresa to the Vaerie Ziegenfuss Tennis camp in CA in the early 80's. I thank her for all of the time she put in on the court with me and giving me the ability to play a sport I love so much. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. God Bless.

Gregg,

Toby and I were so saddened to hear about Cathy. We were hoping to see you two on our next trip to New Mexico. She was such a big part of our lives in Alaska for so many years. Always a smile and encouragement. Except when she was trying to teach me a western grip. Never did happen. And I agree with John's comments - she needs to get busy organizing some events for the rest of us for when we all meet on the court again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the boys.

Gregg,

You gave Cathy the life she always wanted.

She inspired and mentored so many people. She gave her students more than tennis lessons--she gave them "life lessons."

Thank God Heaven has her now so she can start organizing a tennis program for all of us to participate in when we all meet again.

Thank you, Cathy, for who you were, and for allowing so many people into your life.

We will miss you, but NEVER forget you.

Gregg, our deepest sympathy goes out to you and the entire family. What always struck me about Cathy was that she was so gracious and warm to all she met - on and off the court. She treated everyone like a close friend and was a wonderfully motivating coach and an inspiration to us all. We are deeply saddened by your sudden loss but do know we will always have fond memories of Cathy and the positive and profound influence she had on children - and on tennis in Alaska.
