Cecilia McIntyre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 1, 2024.
With tremendous sadness, we announce the passing of our incredibly kind, gentle, loving mother and Nana.

Cecilia Joan McIntyre was diagnosed with late stage cancer on November 7th 2023. She was kept comfortable and cared for by the exceptional and compassionate team of nurses, doctors and support staff at North shore hospice in North Vancouver. She peacefully passed there on January 7th 2024 at the age of 82. She was surrounded in love, with her two daughters Mary and Elisse, by her side.

Cecilia Joan's life began on February 26th 1941, in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. She was born to Ronald Arthur McIntyre, and Mary Margaret Leask McIntyre, an older brother John (pre deceased) and younger brother Jim. She grew up in MooseJaw and spent the summers at their family cottage on Katepwa Lake in the Qu'apelle valley.

Joan attended Central Collegiate high school and transferred to Sionion Convent for her final year, graduating in 1960. Upon graduation, she received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Saskatchewan in 1968.

During these years, her beautiful voice had her singing at weddings and in choirs. She conducted an orchestra in her musical studies and developed a fondness for classical music.

Joan began her teaching career in 1961. She taught elementary school in Regina and Calgary. Eventually leaving the Prairies for Vancouver, she and her new husband Jim Whiteside settled briefly in Vancouver.

There, she taught at Irwin Park Elementary school in West Vancouver.

Her husband's career took them back east to Ottawa, Ontario. Joan left her teaching career behind to do what she wanted more than anything, to be a mother.

She welcomed a daughter in 1972 and another in 1974.

In 1975, Jim, Joan, Mary and Elisse left Ottawa permanently and moved back to Vancouver, they settled near Edgemont Village in North Vancouver.

Her years in North Van were filled with singing in the choir at Highlands United Church, volunteering at her girls elementary school and hosting many

laughter filled dinner parties with close, dear friends.

She mentioned often, this was one of the happiest times of her life.

In 1985, Joan and family moved to West Vancouver. Joan enjoyed golfing, painting, gardening and many peaceful walks on Capilano golf course with her dog, Lady.

In 1998, Cecilia Joan became a grandmother for the first time. She had four more grandchildren over the years and her relationship with them was extraordinary. She found incredible joy in fostering a strong relationship with each one. She spent many weekends and evenings one on one with each of them. She took great care and time to research their favourite foods, set up their favourite games and activities and get to know them as much as possible. Nana always wanted them to know how loved, appreciated and special they were to her.

Cecilia Joan was other worldly in many ways. She had a profound depth of character and an ethereal beauty. Her paintings of flowers she left behind are a remarkable reflection of her true essence. Delicate and detailed with a whimsical innocence and grace.

She saw the exquisiteness in everything and everyone and loved so deeply.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Whiteside Lantz( Van Lantz) of Fredericton New Brunswick and Elisse Whiteside of West Vancouver

Her 5 grandchildren Treya, Jaron, Graydon, MollieBryn and Maria

Her brother Jim McIntyre and sister in law Cathy McIntyre.

Her nieces and nephews

Janet, Tim, Rob, Patty, Jeff, Paul and Jill and their families.

Thank you Mom, for loving us all so much. Your patient, loving presence, unwavering support and big beautiful heart were truly one of a kind and will be profoundly missed. Your Baking powder biscuits, mushroom tarts and chocolate cake will never taste the same without the magic and love you poured into everything you did.

We all love you so much

A celebration of her life will be held at Capilano Golf and Country Club

420 Southborough Drive in West Vancouver on February 24th 2024 at 4pm

The family wish to give a heartfelt thank you to the North Shore Hospice for their extraordinary compassion, kindness and care.

My favourite memory of Cecilia was at art class in Beaconsfield, Quebec (outside of Montreal). With our common friend, Cindy, we three would spend several hours every week for a few years painting....and chatting. Cecilia loved to paint flowers in great detail. Her lovely, sun filled home in Beaconsfield all decorated in blue and white with yellow accents was the showcase for her pretty floral paintings. We were sad to see her move to Eastern Canada and then back out west to Vancouver. But Cecilia managed several visits back to Montreal and we were always delighted to visit with her. She was truly a wonderful person, thoughtful and a good listener, a gentle and kind soul. I miss her...

I just recently found out about Cecilia's passing which was almost a year ago. I was shocked and saddened! Joan (Cecilia) was a friend of mine at high school in Moose Jaw. She also sang at my wedding in 1961. Throughout the years we kept in touch at Xmas or birthdays and we always enjoyed our visits together. My warmest thoughts and condolences go out to her family as this also must be a hard time for you during this Xmas season.

I came to know and love Cecilia through mutual friend, Cindy Zylinski. Cecilia had just moved to Beaconsfield in the Montreal area into a beautiful home decorated in her signature colours; blue, white and yellow. Cecilia, Cindy and I attended a weekly art class together for a few years. Cecilia painted the prettiest floral paintings in minute detail. I admired Cecilia for her sweet disposition and kind heart and I will miss her.

We knew Cecilia as a neighbour whom we met socially many times. Like everyone else, we found her to be a truly gentle and delightful woman, always with a smile. My husband Ray who paints used to enjoy chatting with her at these neighbourly gatherings. I loved her paintings, nature at it's best. Sending condolences to the family, what a treasure you had.

As I read over all of the lovely tributes to dear Cecilia, I'm nodding my head in agreement with everything. I came to know Cecilia in the last few years as my neighbour and dear friend. If I met her on the street, we would stop and chat and I always walked away smiling. If we shared dinner or a drink, or just a long conversation, the end result was always the same. Cecilia had a way of making me smile and feel grateful to have known her. She was endlessly charitable to others, very funny, witty and kind. Cecilia embodied graciousness. My heartfelt condolences to her family for your loss. I will always remember Cecilia with fond memories and a warm smile.

I am so saddened to hear of Cecilia´s passing. My thoughts are with you at this very difficult time, Mary, Elisse and family.
We grew up on the same street in North Vancouver. I remember your Mom would always make the yummiest looking smoothies before school. I also remember my Granny coming to play your piano while your Mom sang. She had such a beautiful voice. Sending you all my love. Susan Johns (Patterson)

I was blessed to have spent time with Cecilia when she lived in Fredericton for awhile. A beautiful, kind, thoughtful, talented and genuine lady who always made me smile. The love she had for her family was always so evident as her eyes lit up when she talked about them. I am so sorry for your loss

I met Cecilia in hospice as I was there caring for my wife. I never thought I would forge such a beautiful relationship with another patient but I did. I enjoyed chatting with her, playing guitar and singing for her and hearing all about her life and sharing stories. She truly made my time at hospice easier and I looked forward to seeing her and making her laugh. A truly unforgettable, beautiful woman whom I will never ever forget. Cecilia, I knew you for but a brief moment of my life and yours but I truly feel I've known you forever. The stars in the night sky will twinkle a little brighter and I will always smile when I think of you. You are and will always be missed by all that knew you. An amazing, beautiful, kind woman and someone I'm glad to have befriended. You made a difference in my life when things were at there hardest and for that I thank you and I thank for your family for sharing your precious time with me and allowing me to get to know you.

With Love,

Your friend, Hospice Matt
