Celia Martinez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 29, 2020.

Celia Molina Martinez went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 22, 2020, at the age of 101 years old.  She was born on September 4, 1918, in Taylor, TX, to Urbano and Jacinta Molina and was one of eleven (11) children and the last surviving member of her family. Her birth occurred during the 1918 Influenza Pandemic (Spanish flu).

Celia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, and neighbor.  She met and married the love of her life, Thomas M. Martinez, Sr., and they were so blessed and privileged to have five children and shared 64 years of their lives with one another in marriage. She selflessly devoted her entire life to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who all adored her.

Mother reached three important goals in life by being a faithful servant of the Lord, a loving wife, and a wonderful and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  She was a wise counselor to all her family.

Mother was a woman of strong faith in God and believed in the importance of living a Christian life. She was an active member of Grace Presbyterian Church, attended church on Sundays, and participated in the Presbyterian Women’s Bible Study Circle. She was a former member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and Edgewood Presbyterian Church and active in church life participating in Sunday School, VBS, and the “Mujeres de la Iglesia” holding various officer positions. Celia was the recipient of the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Lifetime Membership Award and honored at the 2018 Annual Conference for the Hispanic Presbyterian Women of the Synod of the Sun in MO Ranch, Hunt, TX.

She was a living epistle and in her daily living she taught the Word of God by her actions and faith.  Our family is a testament of her tireless work of love and commitment to the Lord and her family. She left behind a legacy of faith and hope for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

One of mother’s favorite Bible Scriptures is Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”

Some of her greatest joys in her life were traveling throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe with our dad.  Mother and Dad celebrated their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary with their family, extended family, friends, and church family with a beautiful Church Service followed by a reception. Their 50th anniversary trip was to Europe, visiting London, England; Paris, France; and Barcelona & Valencia, Spain. They were a part of history as they happened to be in Paris, France, at a hotel nearby where Princess Diana died in a car accident. They were in London, England and witnessed the funeral of Princess Diana.

Mother loved to cook for her family and it gave her great joy that it brought them all together. She was devoted to her family and cherished the time she spent with her family, telling stories, laughing out loud, and loving her family.  She was known for her sense of kindness, devotion, humor and unique laughter. Her children could only aspire to be as giving and loving a mother as she was.

She dressed to perfection in elegance and beautiful clothes. She joked about the importance of a person having PA or “Personal Appearance” meaning that it was important to be dressed, combed, and look presentable at all times. Her graceful style reflected the way she lived.

She took seriously her civic duty to vote and made many trips in person to cast her vote. She had an opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., with our dad and were guests of Congressman Henry B. Gonzales, Sr., and received a tour of his office at the Capital, a trip that had a great impact in their lives.

Mother had a wonderful and a long blessed life and she lived it to the fullest.  She was a gift to all who knew her.  Her special love will live on in our hearts forever.  She was dearly loved and already she is greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by our dad, her husband, Thomas Martinez, Sr.,  and her parents Jacinta and Urbano Molina, and 5 sisters—Eva Jimenez, Maria Guajardo, Virginia Oviedo, Molly Reynosa, Omega Garcia and 5 brothers—Hernan Molina, Joel Molina, Isaac Molina, Ramiro Molina, and Martin Molina.

Survivors and those left to cherish her memories are her five children Hortense Garza (late Rene); Hilda Flores, (Sam)(Dallas); Anna Marie Perez (Roger), (Arlington, TX); Rev. Tom  Martinez, Jr. (Beatrice); Olga Yanez (Nick); 16 grandchildren—Lisa-Garza Lacey (David)( Boston); Lydia Jesko (Dustan), Sarah Flores (Charles) ; Miriam Fernandez (Jonathan); Sammy Flores (Sarah) (Dallas); Joshua Flores (Natalie) (Dallas); Johnny Flores (New York, NY); Andrew Perez, Jr. (Robin); Sergio Perez (Sandy) (Bedford, TX); Tommy Martinez; Gammy Martinez (Kelley)(Austin); Nathaniel Martinez (Austin); Jacob Martinez; Benjamin Martinez; Dr. Gregory Yanez (New York, NY); Elizabeth Yanez;  and 8 great-grandchildren—baby Cali Renay Fernandez; Lucia Grace Flores (Dallas); Eva Joy Flores (Dallas); Hallie Flores (Dallas); Samantha Flores; baby Noah James Martinez (Austin); Simon Cruz Perez, Andrew Roger Perez III and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all of her caregivers

who took care of mother in her home.

Thank you to the nurses and doctors at Main Methodist Hospital

who cared for mother.

Thank you to the staff of VITAS Hospice for the

wonderful care they provided mother.

My heart is heavy but knowing that Mom is resting in the Lords arms comforts me because she is not suffering or in pain. Mom knew the Lord and was always praying, praising and thanking Him for all the years He had given her and for her Tesoros. I thank the Lord for giving us such wonderful and caring and loving parents that always instilled in us the Love of God, to serve Him and to always be grateful and thankful. The Lord gave each one of us more time to spend with Mom the last weeks and I am so grateful for that. We were all special to her but she was so so proud of you Tom.
I know you were a good Son to her and she was always grateful for that. Mom, you will be missed very much, but you left us with so many wonderful memories and teachings, taking us to church, encouraging us to do our best, especially to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength and mind and our neighbor, your contagious laughter and advice. You will be in my heart forever. I love You Mom!❤Loving You Always Your Daughter Hortense

Dear Mother,
Thank you for your unconditional love and faith you taught me as a child that have been engraved in my heart.
You taught me to seek God kingdom first and everything will be added unto you. Samuel and I valued and treasured your words and passed the Love Of God to our three sons and now they are teaching the love of God to our precious grandchildren, your great grandchildren Eva Joy,Lucia Grace and Hallie Claire.
I remember you and Dad always had a welcoming heart to everyone who visited your home. Youll hosted many of my friends from around the world and they enjoyed having a wonderful warm meal and sharing your faith journey with them.
We know you are now Celebrating in Gods kingdom and rejoicing along with Dad and all your love one that have gone before you . We know you will welcome us with open arms when God calls us home . We will keep the Faith and share the Love of God just like you set the example for us to follow. One of your favorite bible verse is My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one John 17:15
I Love you Mother and will forever hold you in my heart.
With all my Love ,
Your daughter

It is always difficult to try to summarize a life and put into words, the way that my mother of 101 years influenced and blessed her parents, siblings, husband, five children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and so many others whose lives she touched. As her only son, I was able to witness the many ways that she taught, especially by her example. Many have shared how her faith, love for God and neighbor, love of serving in the Church, love of family, laughter, kindness, encouraging nature, and so many other positive attributes were those things that people enjoyed about my mother.
My decision to pursue ordained ministry and to serve as a Pastor in the Presbyterian Church is directly related to the prayers of both my mother and father. They always encouraged me, gave me counsel, prayed for me and reminded me to trust in the Lord. My mother helped others to practice compassion and forgiveness, to value the importance of knowing God's Word and attending church services, on helping those in need, on the importance of giving to the work of God with the stewardship of time, talents and tithes. Her home was always a place where all were welcomed, where a meal was served, where hospitality was practiced and where love and hope overflowed. I, together with my sisters, have been very blessed to have had their faithful witness serve to lay a Christian foundation in our lives.
We were so very blessed to have our mother for many, many years. She would tell me, "You know, I may not wake up tomorrow, my heart is weak, but I will be with the Lord." Or she would say, "I am getting closer to the finish line and will receive the crown of life." I would also hear her say that my father had come to visit and was ready to take her home. She said, they were always traveling in her dreams. Let me finish with this blessing: 'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his countenance upon you and give you peace.' Numbers 6: 24-26 I love and miss you, mama.

Grandma Chela & Andy at the Beauty Salon

July 13, 2020

There are very few relationships as beautiful and powerful as the relationship between a grandmother and her grandson. I am so thankful I was able to have Grandma Chela in my life for nearly 44 years. She was such a special person. In some ways, it feels almost surreal that she has graduated from her life here on earth to the Kingdom of God in Heaven. Maybe I just expected Grandma Chela to be here forever.

Grandma Chela had so many amazing character traits including that of a Christian, story teller, comedian, impersonator, prayer warrior and party host. Grandma had a great collection of stories that she shared, some recent and some from an era long ago. I loved hearing stories about her making fresh tortillas daily or stories about my parents when they were first dating or stories about the trip Grandpa Tomas, Grandma Chela and I took to Mexico City and Acapulco after my high school graduation. Grandma's stories were often funny.
And her laugh was so contagious. Her laughter will forever be etched in my memory. Grandma was a true prayer warrior - nobody prayed for me more than my grandma and I attribute many of the blessings in my life to the power of her prayer. And if you never participated in a Bible study with my grandma, you really missed out. She always knew the answers! This was because she committed so much of scripture to memory. God was always first, but family was a close second. Grandma never missed out on a good family party. She was so energized by her family. I loved seeing her in action during Thanksgiving, Christmas or any family get together really as she made the rounds to visit and talk with everyone.

I am truly thankful that my grandma was there for so many ordinary and special moments in my life. As the matriarch in our family, she will be truly missed. My cousins and I would always have a running joke about who was the favorite grandchild. Every grandchild claimed they were the favorite. But the truth is, she made each and every one of us feel like we were the #1 grandchild.

Grandma - I love you. Thank you for being such a special person in my life.

Until we meet again,

Andy (a.k.a. Precious)

My condolences to my dear childhood neighbors and friends and the extended family. My heart was filled with sadness upon hearing of your Mamita. I will always remember your Beautiful Mother with a smile on her face and her distinct laughter. All of you were such a comfort to me as we sat at the dining table after my own Mothers funeral. I will never forget how your Mother with her faith made me feel everything would be ok as she shared stories and much laughter that was just what I needed and knew what a great Amiga my Mother had been blessed with. God bless all of you and may the soul of your beautiful Mother rest in the everlasting peace of Christ Almighty.

Thank you so much for all that you did. You were a beacon of wisdom, love, and kindness. You taught me so many important lessons. I will always hold you dearly in my heart. I will miss you immensely, but I am reassured that you are now resting peacefully with the Lord.

Your steadfast love and faith is the bedrock for our whole family. I know your love and prayer helped Lizzy get through her illness to receive the blessing of a lung transplant, and I know that same love and prayer has helped me get where I am today as I embark on the beginning of my career in medicine.

I was so blessed to be able to spend so much time with you growing up. I will cherish the memories of this past Christmas. I have chosen to include a photo from that celebration.

Anna Marie Perez

July 12, 2020

My name is Anna Marie and I am the third of the 5 siblings. I am NOT able to be in person for the Service, due to my illness, but I am so thankful to God to celebrate our mamitas blessed life and to thank her for being an amazing mother.

Mamita, I miss you already so much, but you completed your mission on Earth and now you are resting in the arms of our Lord.

You had a title for all of us and I was so thrilled that you called me your Coordinator taking care of the weekly schedules of the workers and the weekend schedules of the family members who took good care of you, of ordering your medications, scheduling your doctor and hair appointments, and making sure you had rides to church on Sundays. You kept the five of your children very busy but we took care of you and we did it with lots of love and with the help of the Lord.

Thank you mamita for your big heart to love your family. Thank you for your daily prayers, your tears of joy and sadness, your thoughtfulness, your caring ways, your compassion, and most importantly for sharing your FAITH in God with us. I feel so blessed that I was able to pray with you, read the Our Daily Bread devotional with you, study our Bible Circle Lessons together, hear you read the Bible, even though your eye sight was failing you.

Mamita, I love you so much and I thank you with all of my heart for always being there for Roger & for me, for your grandchildren Andy, Robin, Sergio & Sandy and your great grandchildren Andrew and Simon. Great Grandson Simon always enjoyed sharing pan dulce at your table and playing his trumpet and guitarrón for you. You called Simon the businessman.

I close with this favorite Bible Scripture of yours from:

II Timothy 4: 7-8: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me on that day. Amen

My dearest mother. Words can not express my sadness and sorrow to know you are no longer with us. You are the precious Rose and the radiant Diamond that will forever live in my heart. I will miss that beautiful smile your soft voice and your laugher. You lived a Christian life to its fullest and shared your Christian faith with your family and friends. You loved my children Gregory and Elizabeth so much and was so proud of them. You will tell me how is Mi doctorcito my doctor Gregitos y mi pricensa Elizabeth my princess. Take card of her. Share to your children the Christian pathways and they will never deport from it. When sharing with mom our plans you would always say if it is Gods will or Si Dios Quiere. I honor you mother and know you are with our Heavenly Father and heavenly angels with your Loved ones dad, parents, siblings and all saints.
Some day we will join you in heaven, but for now we must plant the seeds of love peace and joy. Grow our faith and live the Christian life you taught us.
We adore You and Love you forever.

My aunt Celia became a second mother to me as a young 22 yr. old man when I returned to San Antonio starting my new career. She and my Uncle Tomas opened their home to me as if I had always been close to them and their children. It felt so much like home. I will forever be grateful for their kindness and genuine love and care that they extended to me. Aunt Celia would always invite me over for dinner no matter what day of the week it would be. A true Christian woman that had a heart of gold. She had such a smile and sense of humor that would light up the room and make me and everyone around her gravitate to her. She was truly the heart and soul of the Martinez family. I am forever grateful to my Aunt, Uncle and cousins that made me feel so much a part of their immediate family.

I never had the honor of meeting Sra. Martinez, but knowing the wonderful person that you are, Hilda, I know for a fact your sweet mother was truly a beautiful woman, and Rene and I could always see the love in your eyes for her. You and your sisters have so many beautiful attributes which you each inherited from your mother, so in knowing you, I had the pleasure of knowing Celia Martinez. God bless you and keep you in this difficult time, and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, hugs and blessings to you and your family.

Grandma Chela was the rock, the Shepard, La Reyna of our family. Im so thankful for grandma Chelas life and the immense love, faith and generosity she shared with everyone she met. What a treasure the Lord has received in the Kingdom of Heaven. She will be sorely missed but we are carrying her on in our hearts, faith and actions. Psalms 46 was a verse she would always share with us Dios es nuestro amparo y fortaleza, nuestro pronto auxilio en las tribulaciones. May she Rest In Peace.

Celia was a true Christian. She always shared her faith when you visited with her. The love for her family was so visible. She was so devoted to her husband especially as she cared for him in their home. I always admired her because she was so loving to her family. Her daughter Olga is a close friend. Prayers for all her family ! May she rest in Peace!
