Charles (Charlie) R. Armstrong, age 84, of New Smyrna Beach, died on Friday, March 8, 2013, at Southeast Volusia Hospice Care Center. Charlie was born in Jackson, TN on August 13, 1928 to Sally "Mimi" Garrett and Auval Armstrong. At age 15 he served in the Merchant Marines followed by continued service to his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in the late 1940's. He met his wife, Judy, in Boulder, CO while working as a real estate appraiser. After visiting the New Smyrna Beach area in the mid 60's, he and his family permanently moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL in 1977. After moving, Charlie continued to work as a real estate appraiser for multiple banks and lending institutions in the Daytona Beach/New Smyrna Beach area. He also served as a Special Master for the Zoning and Tax Assessment Board for a number of years. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, Charlie is survived by his wife, Judy; daughter Carla (Paul) Lucas, Memphis, TN; son Stephen (Jennifer) Armstrong, Jacksonville, FL; daughter Risa (David) Rahm, Nashville, TN; and seven grandchildren, Kyle Lucas, Kristopher Lucas, Morgan Armstrong, Chandler Armstrong, Bayden Armstrong, John Exum, III., and Charles Exum. The memorial service will be held at 5:30pm on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the chapel located in the Southeast Volusia Hospice Care Center, 4140 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, FL, with Reverend Beverly Richardson officiating. A celebration of Charlie's life will follow the memorial service at the Armstrong's residence in New Smyrna Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Southeast Volusia Hospice Care Center, 4140 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, FL 32141. Charlie's family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Rose Traub and the staff of the Care Center for their care, concern and comfort during this difficult time of transition.
