Dear Laurie, Chris, Curt, and Caryn, I was so sorry to hear about Charlie. Other than my own parents, I knew him longer than anyone else and I always felt like he was an uncle. His sense of humor was the best and he was my father's closest and oldest friends. More than once I was there when they laughed about how my dad (always a bit clumsy) fell out of a boat or an atoll during the Korean War and Charlie saved him. Dear Mrs. Bauer, Chris, Curt, and Caryn:
I am so very sorry to hear about Mr. Bauer's passing. I feel like I've known your parents for as long as I've known my own. I have many pleasant childhood memories of when our families would get together.
It seemed no matter how much time had passed since the last time they'd talked, our dads could pick up with each other like it had only been a day. Nothing made my dad happier than a visit or a phone call with his good friend "Charlie Bauer". He was my father's oldest and dearest friend and because of that, I will always hold a very special place in my heart for him.
I know this is a very difficult time. Mr. Bauer's passing makes my own father's passing feel fresh again. It helps me to think that now these two best friends are together again, and like usual, picking up right where they left off. I only mention that because I hope thinking of them laughing and talking together might help with your grief as it does mine. My thoughts are with all of you and your mother.
