Charles Allen Bell

To the family of Charlie Bell, my husband, Harold Gibson and I, Rev. Dr. Deborah Stapleton, extend our deepest sympathy to you. Charlie Bell was a friend always, although sometimes a political adversary. We loved, appreciated, and respected him! We cherish the memories of working to change the city of Newark. We are grateful for all that he did to make a difference.

Your heart soon will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Mr. Charles A. Bell will be truly missed. His big booming voice, larger than life personality, and his devotion to the citizens of Newark, NJ is undeniable. One of the kindest people I have known. Thank you for sharing those years with us at the Newark Housing Authority. I will mourn you for now, and keep you alive in my heart forever.

Did this gentleman ever work as a security guard for Doctors Hospital of Hyde Park back in 1994-95?

The legacy of civic and community contributions of Mr. Charles Bell are many and cannot possibly be fit into a few sentences. He was, indeed, a leader, an activist, and an old school family man. That is how I knew him best.
When I first met Mr. Bell and the Bell family I knew nothing of what he did for his beloved Newark community. I knew him as my college roommate, Myriam's, Dad. Mr. Bell was an imposing figure to an 18 year old college freshman. However, over the years, with a continued "sister-ship" with my "Roomie" I was privileged to be included in the Bell family orbit! And what an orbit it was and is! I watched him campaign and serve his community with such fervor as I've never seen before or since. He and Mrs. Bell always had a loving and close relationship and were true partners in community service and family! They influenced my career path into teaching.
As their family grew from their three girls, nieces and nephews, to grandkids, to great grandkids, the one constant I always enjoyed was watching Mr. Bell just relaxing (very rare because he was always on the move) with a contented smile on his face watching the family buzz about him. I can also never forget that deep laugh he had that matched his calm, easy going, but get- it- done personality. I can also say that he made THE BEST SEAFOOD GUMBO on the EARTH! Mr. Bell will be sadly missed. The happiness comes in knowing the legacy in the community and in his family that he left to prosper. My deepest condolences and sympathy are with Mr. Bell's family, friends, and community. I love and miss you Mr. B.

Very grateful for the breakfast with my cousin Charles and his lovely wife Lilly, in September 2022 at Cracker Barrel in High Point N.C. What a beautiful Sunday it was, full of laughter and reflections of New Bern. He looked so distinguished that Sunday, dressed in black and standing tall. Charles was a community and family person at an early age, loved and respected by many. Cherish the many memories, Family.

My favorite memory would be every year growing up, Uncle Charles would come bursting into Aunt Minnie's house during Christmas dinner. He's have his giant bag full of toys and Santa hat on. I remember, as a child, I couldn't wait to see what he had in that bag for us. Uncle Charles was a light that brought cheer to all those around him. He will truly be missed.

I Love You Uncle Charles. You were larger than life and a Beautiful Soul. You Loved God, Family and Community. You will be sorely missed.
