Charlie was my American Dad when I was 19 years old and spent a memorable summer in Wisconsin. It was my first experience in the USA and I hold great memories of all his family.

Charlie was one of my favorite people. He always had time to say "hello" and chat for a bit whenever I saw him. I loved his commitment to USL, but more than that, I loved how he cared about his daughters and their education. I send my deepest sympathies to all of you. I like to think we became friends, too -- an even greater privilege and, with such a gentleman, a high honor. He was always warm, down-to-earth, direct, funny, and passionate, in a refreshingly, endearingly low-key way; he also was clearly someone who savored his relationships with people. It was a very, very sad day for me when I learned of of Charlie's passing. I am still filled with sorrow at the loss of such a wonderful, big hearted, and loyal friend whom I have known since junior high school. And while our paths rarely crossed in recent years, it was a joy to see him occasionally in Door County. My deepest condolences to all the family whom I know he loved so much.

Charlie was a man who loved and was loved.
