Charles R. Craven

Charles Ruble Craven "Boo", 70, passed away peacefully at his home on Aug. 15, 2014, in Pedro, Florida. He was born in Bardstown, Kentucky on May 15, 1944, to the late Charles A. and Mary Craven.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Craven. Survivors include sisters, Mary Ferguson (Fran), Emily Giddens (Bo), and Betty Smith, and brothers, Joe Craven, Perry Craven, and Steve Craven (Jeanne).

His adolescence in Hollywood, Florida with his siblings was recounted with great humor and love. In 1968, he moved to Pedro, Florida where he quickly became a respected member of his community, serving as fire chief of South Marion and Pedro Fire Departments. He was very proud to share his remarkable engineering talents with his community. Volunteering in the Belleview United Methodist Church in their thrift store and as vice president of the Methodist Men's Group brought him and others great joy. Charles served as vice president of the First Florida Chapter Military Vehicle Preservation Association where he enjoyed meeting and honoring those in service of their community and country. Hunting, fishing, racing and cooking for a crowd were his favorite hobbies. Above all else he treasured his family. He is survived by his loving devoted wife of 25 years, Connie Wilson Craven; sons, Allen Craven, Joe Craven and Ricky Watts (Lynn); daughters, Kandi LaVoie (Ron), Cara Lee Carver, Sara Parris (Dewayne), and Tina Burgess; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service honoring him was held on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Belleview United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. He will be laid to rest with a remembrance ceremony at Roger's Chapel United Methodist Church in Florence, Alabama on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to United Methodist Children's Home (51 Children's Way, Enterprise, FL 32725 or by phone 386-668-5088) or Hospice of Marion County (online at Hospiceofmarion.com or by phone 352-854-5218).

Sending my sincere condolences to the friend and family. May the joyous memories bring you peace during this difficult time. May you also draw consolation and strength from the God of all comfort (2 Cor. 1:3)

I'm thankful for a good conversation with Charles some months ago at his home. What a delightful Christian brother. Looking forward to seeing him again "over yonder."
