He was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Port Henry, N.Y., son of John Frederick Dery and Sabine (Poirier) Dery and grew up in New York City, Kittanning, Pa., and Wickenburg, Ariz.
As a teenager, Chuck exhibited a great aptitude for the violin. His musical aspirations were cut short by the onset of the Depression. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served all over the world in World War II.
While at Officer's Candidate School at Fort Trumbull in New London, he met the former Wilhelmina Ciavaglia and married her on Feb. 7, 1945. They were married for 61 years until her passing in 2006.
Chuck was employed as a supervisor at Electric Boat responsible for steam boilers and later ran Ciavaglia's Market in Fort Trumbull with his wife. They enjoyed the friendship of many in the Navy and civil service communities.
In his later years, Chuck relished the role of mentor to his grandson, Andrew, and attended all of his sporting events. He was one of Andrew's best friends and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by a son, Matthew Dery and his wife, Suzanne, and a grandson, Andrew, all of Waterford. He is also survived by a sister, Olive Hanne, and three nephews and a niece, all of California.
He was predeceased by his wife; an infant daughter, Pamela Jean Dery; and two sons, Mark Frederick Dery and Luke Austin Dery.
Family and friends are asked to gather for a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
The Impellitterri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., has been entrusted with arrangements.

Dear Mat,
I spent so many happy hours with your parents Chuck and Mina in the store the four years we were at the lab. They were always part of the lab family and attended many of our parties. Our daughter Virginia even named her goldfish Chuck and Mina years after we left the lab. Our sympathy to you and your family. Your Dad was a special person and so was your Mom.

Hi Mat,
I just learned of your dad's passing. He was a great guy, and as much a member of the Sound Lab family as those of us who worked there! My condolences to your family.

Dear Matt, Sue and Andrew:
I am so sorry to hear about Chuck. I will miss his kindness and his humor. He loved all of you so much and you took such good care of him. I only found out today and it's hard to believe he is gone. But he will be in a better place, as we all know. I will always remember him at Andrew's games, all of them (I don't think he missed one) and he loved that kid! I will never forget him and I will keep you, Matt, Sue, and Andy, in my prayers that God will help comfort you in this time of sadness.
