Charles Gittins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 23, 2024.
LtCol Charles W. Gittins, USMCR (Ret.), 67, of Lake Frederick, Virginia passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, while under the compassionate care of the Hospice Unit at the Veterans' Administration Medical Facility in Martinsburg, WV. Known to his friends as "Charlie," he had been in failing health for the past few years. His beloved wife Melissa was at his bedside when he passed.

Charlie Gittins was born in Wilkes-Barre PA on October 26, 1956, to the late Charles E. and Rosemary Gittins, and raised in Mt. Laurel, NJ. He graduated from Lenape High School in 1974 and then attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating in the class of 1979 and taking his commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. After initial Marine infantry training at Quantico, he was assigned to flight school in Pensacola, where he earned the gold wings of a Naval Flight Officer. Thereafter he served as a Radar Intercept Officer in the Marine Corps' F-4S Phantom in tours of duty with two different Marine Corps fighter squadrons based in Beaufort, South Carolina.

His Marine career took a different turn when he applied for and was accepted to the Marine Corps' Funded Law Program. Graduating first in his class at the Catholic University of America's Law School, he became a Marine Corps Judge Advocate, in which billet he ably served his military clients. During Operations Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-91, he deployed to the theater of operations to provide counsel and investigative support regarding alleged violations of the rules of engagement. Upon his return to the United States, he was assigned to serve as the Advisor to the Secretary of Defense for POW/MIA Affairs.

Leaving active duty in 1992, he worked for two years with the noted law firm of Williams & Connolly in Washington, DC, after which he opened a solo practice of his own, concentrating on criminal defense in military justice matters. He successfully defended military clients in several high-profile cases. Officers of the Judge Advocates Corps in all services of the United States military knew of and respected him as a skilled practitioner of military law.

In 2012, and after reducing his caseload of military justice matters, Gittins took a position with local processing giant Valley Proteins, Inc., working as staff attorney for product security enforcement and other corporate matters. His failing health forced his retirement from Valley Proteins in 2023.

In his personal life, Gittins was an accomplished private pilot of single and twin-engine private aircraft. He held all relevant FAA licenses and certifications, including an instructor certification. He shared these skills with the community by serving as a pillar of the Winchester Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol. At the age of 50, he also became an avid skydiver, earned a D license and various USPA certifications, including AFF Instructor, Tandem Instructor, Safety and Training Advisor and Senior Rigger. He logged over 2500 jumps. He established, owned and operated Blue Ridge Skydiving Adventures, a weekend sky-diving business based at the New Market airport in the Shenandoah Valley.

Buoyantly self-confident, unceasingly can-do in attitude, tenaciously dedicated to his clients and unfailingly loyal to his friends, Gittins grabbed life and lived it to its fullest. His sense of humor and joie de vivre will be sorely missed by those who knew, admired, and loved him.

LtCol Gittins is survived by his wife Melissa and stepdaughter Kellen Strosnider, both of Lake Frederick, VA, and by brother William Gittins (Susan), niece Jackie and nephew Sean.

There will be a memorial service for LtCol Gittins at the United States Naval Academy Chapel at a time and date to be determined. All friends and former Naval Academy classmates are invited. A private interment in the Naval Academy's Columbarium will occur thereafter. Prior to his passing, LtCol Gittins asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions in memoriam be directed to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which he deemed to be a particularly worthy charitable cause.

Charles saved my military career by representing me in a case in 1997, and proving my innocence. I remember the weight lifting off of me when he said he would take my case. I had very little money back then, and he was very kind with his fees. It meant a lot to me and my family. I went on to have a stellar career, and recently retired after 37 years total, and the last 18 in special operations. I deployed 28 times, 26 in the war on terror. None of that would have happened if not for Charles saving my career. He was a hero to me for how he did it. I was, and am forever grateful.

Charlie was one of a kind . . . the best kind! I first met him as his OIC in a renegade JAG defense unit at Camp Hanson, Okinawa, Japan. When it came to law, Charlie was a natural . . . The best USMC attorney with whom I ever served.
During Desert Storm, I served with an activated reserve battalion assigned to 8th Marines. After the shooting ended and we were all dug in breathing smoke from burning oil wells, Charlie (who not surprisingly was serving in country on some General´s staff) learned of my situation and had orders cut for me to take a 3-day "special assignment" near Div. HQ. It was great to see him, take hot shower and eat a warm meal.
We kept in touch during the 90s and early 2000s and handled a case together. Unfortunately, as time passed we lost contact . . . Great to hear he continued on to do great things.
The world is a better place because of him.
So long old friend.

Charlie and I worked together to investigate the friendly fire bombing of 11th Marines during Desert Storm. His contribution to the investigation was invaluable to survivors and justice. And Charlie's great acumen included knowledge of a very rare food truck that sold real American Burgers in Saudi. I will forever be grateful for his assistance in the field and hospitality in the rear.

I knew Charlie when he was a midshipman at the USNA. Many fun times, laughs, and memories made in Annapolis. I am in Annapolis these days with sailing buddies. The best of captains, pirates, and crew can’t replicate Charlie’s quick wit and timely comments. Fond memories of football games, parties, and spirited conversations. A real contagious character whose love of life lives on.

My time practicing law at Williams & Connolly briefly overlapped that of Charlie. He was busy then on Tailhook defense work and as a young attorney and fellow Naval Academy grad, my recollection is that he was a fine example and as others have observed, a force of nature. Very sorry to learn of his untimely passing, and I hope that memories of his life bring comfort to Charlie´s family.

I had the pleasure of working with Charlie when he was doing courts-martial defense. He was full of energy and talent. It was a pleasure to be his co-counsel! I for sure learned a lot!! The JAG community lost a great lawyer when he quit practicing in the military courts. I loved how he advocated for and cared about his clients.
Rest in peace, Charlie.

I first met Charlie in the Civil Air Patrol in Marlton. We met at the old Nike base. I believe his Dad was the commander for our local squadron. I was a member there for several years. Afterwards we were school mates at Lenape. Then much later in life I met up with him again when he was skydiving at Orange, VA. I visited the DZ once to see him jump and I rode the plane in the passenger seat. So sorry to see him go so young.

Charlie was an Annapolis roommate, flight school chum, and while we went to different services after graduation ... for non-varsity athletes at the Academy, life centered around the "Company." And Fun-31 has had a tight knit group that would get together -- for no reason -- once or twice a year for decades. Charlie was omnipresent at those gatherings, and everyone's spirit's lifted when he arrived. A force of nature, with unmatched joie de vivre, you are sorely missed old friend.

I was fortunate to hire Charlie as my attorney following a tragic maratime accident off the coast of Oahu 9 Feb 2001.

Nothing in my 20 year career as a submarine officer could have prepared me and my family for the public scrutiny, chaos, emotional stress we would face and endure.

Charlie´s keen insight and understanding of the Navy´s UCMJ and courts martial procedures ensured I was treated fairly and justly. He fought to protect my honorable discharge and retirement.

After leaving the Navy in Oct 2001, Charlie flew to Japan with me in 2002 as I met the bereaved families of those who had perished.

I miss my friend and mourn his loss.

Charlie and Melissa were my neighbors in Winchester. When I discovered they were running a DZ in New Market, they were exceedingly kind and welcoming to me always. Charlie was a great Marine, attorney, skydiver, and business owner. He left many fond memories and will be missed by all who knew him.

Charlie was a fellow Marine. I got to know him after I retired from the Marines and joined the Virginia Civil Air Patrol (CAP). I was the Commanding Officer of the Winchester, VA CAP squadron when Charlie joined. We had known each other before as Charlie and Melissa use to attend the Marine Corps Get Together each November 10th for our version of the Marine Corps Ball, held at the Battletown Inn Pub in Berryville, VA each year to celebrate the Corps birthday. Within the CAP Charlie and I flew together on occasion. He was an excellent pilot and well liked within the squadron by seniors and cadets alike. He and Melissa were good friends to my wife Pat and myself and he will be missed, not only by Pat and myself but by many others also.
