CLAYTON: Charles Harrelson Gurley, age 67, of Clayton died at Duke University Hospital surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 21, 2011. He was the son of the late Charles Harvey Gurley and Sadye Reid Morris Gurley of Goldsboro, NC. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Jane Peedin Gurley of Clayton, son, Charles H. Gurley, Jr. of Atlantic Beach, daughter, Carol Gurley of Prescott, Arizona, brother, Morris Gurley of New York City, sister, Harriet Gurley Smith of Shreveport, LA, and grandsons, Ben Finch Massey, III, Brandon Clay Massey and Charles H. Gurley, III. Services will be held on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 1:00 PM at McLaurin at Pinecrest Funeral Home in Clayton, and the family will receive friends after the service. Burial will be at Willowdale Cemetery, Elm Street, in Goldsboro on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM. Charles was born and raised in Goldsboro, NC. Charles was a graduate of Georgia Military Academy in Atlanta, GA and attended North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, NC. He was a sales representative for Evergreen Seed Company in Fuquay-Varina prior to his illness. He was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Clayton Rotary Club. Charles was an avid collector of art and antiques with special interest in art glass and American furniture. Charles was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Goldsboro. Charles was a renowned record collector and authority on rhythm and blues music. He was also well known for his shag dancing, having been a dancer since his early days at Goldsboro High School. Charles was inducted into the Shaggers Hall of Fame, North Myrtle Beach, SC, Living Legends, North Myrtle Beach, SC, National Living Legends in Virginia Beach, VA, and Atlantic Beach Hall of Fame in Atlantic Beach, NC. He taught countless young people how to dance and love music, and has left a lasting legacy through them.
