Charles Haas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2014.
Charles George Haas, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord Dec. 4, 2014. Born in San Antonio, Texas, on Sept. 21, 1926, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Aniece Harris Haas; parents, Oscar C. and Linda Haas; brother, Gilbert O. Haas; and infant twin brothers. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and graduated from St. Mary's University in San Antonio with a bachelor of business administration in accounting in 1948. Charlie's love of numbers and business acumen propelled him into Texas A&M University where he served as business manager of the Memorial Student Center. In 1959 he moved his young family to Nacogdoches at the behest of Dr. Ralph Steen, president, to become the business manager for Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. He served as comptroller, then vice-president for fiscal affairs and as the secretary to the Board of Regents. In addition, he served his community as president of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and was a past president of the Noon Lions Club. One of Charlie's most notable accomplishments was to become one of the five founding families to help establish Redeemer Lutheran Church in Nacogdoches where he served as congregational chairman for many years. Recently the fellowship hall was named in his honor. He is survived by his daughter, Sherril Haas Crisp and husband, Ben; son, Michael Charles Haas and wife, Debbie; sister-in-law, Ruth Haas; and five grandchildren, Richard Barnhart, Tiffany Crisp Smith and husband, Jim, Charles Matthew Haas and wife, Belisa, Kelly Haas Land and husband, Jon, and Stacey Haas Plaisance and husband, Josh. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Cason Monk-Metcalf's Sunset Chapel with graveside services following at 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park. I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Haas's passing. I was so honored when he came to both my Mom and Dad's funerals. I will always remember his kindness to our family. I know that he and my Dad are having wonderful conversations about all the changes at SFA.

Your dad was a very special person to the Crisp family. He always had such interesting adventures to share during the days he traveled the USA. I loved hearing him pray at our Thanksgiving celebrations. He will be missed. We love you and pray for your family during this time. Linda & Neal Quillin
