Charles Edward Hallenbeck

I am a local member of the National Beep Baseball Association (NBBA) and a member of the Cleveland Scrappers Beep Baseball team. I currently serve as the NBBA's Hall of Fame chairman and assist with the league's memorial plaque. Also, we have a newly formed "Legacy Committee which is working on capturing, correcting and history of the the game of Beep Baseball and the early days of the NBBA whihc soon will celebrate 50 years of providng the opportunity for those who are sight challenged to play ball. Part of our efforts is to recognize those early members who did so much to lay the foundation for this great sport. We're referring to these early volunteers, supporters and ballplayers as unsung heroes who we wish to recognize.
Dr. Hallenbeck is certainly one of those unsung heroes due to his efforts in Kansas at KU and with the Lawrence (Qunatrills) Raiders Beep Baseball team as their player/manager. This included helping host the 2nd Annual World Series of Beep Baseball in Lawrence, KS in September, 1977 as well as competing in the World Series of Beep Baseball in 1978 and 1979 as well.
I have a small amount of information from those years including a photo of Dr. Hallenbeck batting from a news story from the Kansas City Star of September 17, 1977. Thanks to the forsight of Cora McKiernan ( a Telephone Pioneer from Phoenix and the NBBA's early secretary/treasurer) who saved albums of the realy years of the league we at least have some nice keepsakes and history.
I would like to share what I have with the family and also if they wish to perhaps share a little more about Dr. Hallenbeck's time in beep baseball. Additionally his early work in technologies to assist the sight challenged has been a life changer for so many of us with vision loss.
Dr Hallenbeck was most certainly a man who championed those who are blind and visually impaired helping knock down many barriers to not only have access to sport and vigorous physical activity but, more so in opening up so many doors to education, gainful employment and overall much fuller lives for many.
I extend our condolences to the family and would be honored to learn more about Dr. Hallenbeck who is definately one of those unsung heroes.
