Born at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on April 27, 1959, Charles "Chase" Elbert Harrison, lll was the first born child of Betty Ponder Harrison and the late Dr. Charles E. Harrison, Jr. Chase graduated from Northside High School, attended Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina and then the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Lander, Wyoming.
Chase's lifelong love of the outdoors developed early during his years as an active member of Boy Scout Troop 298 at Northside United Methodist, his church home. After NOLS, he committed fully to his great passion for outdoor adventure by relocating to Winter Park, CO in the early 1980's. He later found his true home in the Aspen / Snowmass community where he lived for more than thirty-five years.
During that time, he held a broad array of jobs working for the Snowmass Transportation Department, Town of Snowmass Village Parks, Recreation & Trails and the Timbers Club at Snowmass. He was an Aspen Whitewater River rafting guide, a masseur at the Aspen Club, a Snowmass Emergency Medical Technician and also served as a Wildcat Volunteer Firefighter.
The challenge of the great outdoors was Chase's calling and the spectacular Rocky Mountains were his playground. He was an accomplished alpine, Nordic and backcountry skier. He was an ever present figure on bluebird days leaving his athletic and graceful ski tracks all over the four magnificent mountains of Aspen/Snowmass. He was the "self-appointed" ski ambassador and meal companion for any and all friends visiting from Atlanta. Chase's Nordic ski skills provided complete access to incredibly difficult and beautiful "off the grid" terrain. He spent many winters accompanying noted author and backcountry ski expert Lou Dawson on trips in pursuit of extreme outside boundary experiences.
During the summer months, Chase focused on hiking and rock climbing throughout Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. His mountain biking skills were exceptional, and his favorite locations to explore on two wheels were Mesa Verde, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks. He also completed the grueling Leadville Trail 100 MTB race earning a much coveted silver belt buckle.
Chase became an accomplished photographer and beautifully captured the amazing landscapes he encountered throughout his adventures, crediting God for creating such inspiring subject matter. He was also a creative cook, modifying recipes and flavors to create "signature dishes" which he shared with his cherished Colorado friends.
Chase's health ultimately became a challenge necessitating a move to be nearer his family. He recently relocated to
Greenville, South Carolina where he died on November 6, 2025.
There will be a private family service to celebrate Chase's life and now his presence in Heaven, joining his father, Charlie, his brother, John and his sister, Elizabeth. Chase is survived by his mother, Betty, his brother, Ponder, his sisters-in-law, Judy and Kerrie, his nephews Charlie (Kemper), Jamie (Jennings), Beau (Hayley), and Ladd and his nieces, Wendy Harrison Ausband (Tripp) and Beth as well as two great nieces, one great nephew and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
