I remember a conversation with Charley in which he vigorously defended the superiority of hearing great music live, rather than recorded. As I was listening to the lovely performance of the Schubert 5th last evening at the Sunflower Music Festival, I thought "Charley, you were absolutely right!"

Dr. Hoag was a wonderful teacher and one of the kindest, most supportive professors I ever had the good fortune to encounter. The many graduate classes I took with him at KU in the 1970's inform my learning to this day. Sincere condolences to his family upon his passing.

Mary, Andrea, Miles & Lana- I'm so sorry for your loss. I want to give each of you the biggest hug. Chaz loved each of you with an amazing exuberance and I have always felt blessed to be on the fringes of your family because of the oversized joy you have for each other. I know he will be missed by so very many. We love you. -Caldwell family

I met Charles when he was in cardiac rehab with my father. While I was waiting for Dad, Charles would talk about music and life. It brightened my day and taught me new appreciation for music. I'm so sorry for his family's loss.

His classes on early 20th-century music were some of my best learning at KU! He taught from a large perspective that made sense--sometimes with funny stories along the way.
