In memory of
Lora L Martin
January 28, 2021
This popped up on my email today and it gave me such a warm feeling to think of Charlie and Jean...and to read the story of their life again....they certainly touched my life, and the life of all the Martins. I miss our annual spring lunches and their warm smiles and laughter. They were always there for me; Charlie often advising when I was trying to buy a house. I miss them. And my dad does too. This from the legacy site so hit home: ...”They were compassionate, caring people with hearts as big as the universe. Charlie's sense of humor was always on display and Jean's steady hand always kept them organized.” Hugs to the entire Clinkenbeard clan.

Dear Pam,
My mom and I are saddened to hear about Jean and Charlie. We both wish we could have visited with them one more time! The amazing thing is how wonderful they led their lives and what amazing friends, hosts, and adventurers they were! Thank you for the Blue Birds, Jean! Thank you for the dog love Charlie! You both helped to make many people richer for knowing you!
Pam, you and Scott, Jill and Ken are in our thoughts. May your memories sustain you. Love, Jamie Button-Appledoorn

Pam & family
I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember your folks very well. They welcomed me in their home and you all welcomed me into your lives. At the time I felt like just the foster kid across the street, but Gene made me feel like family. I'll never forget her yummy fried egg sandwiches and overnights on your deck. They have forever left a heart print on my soul as you have also Pam. God Bless your family. I love you

Remarkable lives! I had the privilege and pleasure of knowing Jill and Scott as Enterprise High School students.

Charlie was always a great colleague but more important a great friend. As a veterinarian, I was always interesting in improving within my profession. Charlies was a person I always looked up to for advice and help with cases. Thanks Charlie, you will always be very special to me.
As for Jean, what a wonderful lady and friend.

To the Clinkenbeard "kids"
What wonderful, fun , loving, intelligent people your parents were. They also had children that reflected their gifts. In life this is about as good as it gets. I know you grieve now, but in time I hope you all remember the all the good times you shared with them. We will join you today to support your in your grief and help you remember some of the "wonderful".

Mum and Dad, I really felt part of the family the year I spent in Redding with you.
Since I arrived at Redding ,the summer of 71 , I was calling Mum for a week Honey (the way Dad called her) thinking that was her real name until Charlie with a big laugh told me that her name was Jean.
Thats the way I always remember them sweet and with good humor.
All my love
Carlos

Dad, Bill Martin, and I send our love. Charlie was dad's dearest friend, meeting in Veterinary school in the 50's. Charlie and Jean (and ken, Jill, Scotty and Pam) were and are family to us. Our lives are so much richer because of them. What a beautiful legacy they built and how honored we are to have shared some part of it. Though we aren't with you our hearts are as you celebrate their lives. Dad had hoped to make the trip but at almost 92 and dislocated by the Paradise fire it was just too much for him. Lots of Love, Lora and dad..

How much I wanted to be present to say goodbye. Charlie and Jean's (mom and dad's) passing broke my heart and was even more painful, since it happened the same year my own father parted to meet our maker. They were both a living example of what love for one another should be, always side by side until the last journey.
Thanks to them I had a wonderful and unforgettable experience, living a whole year with their family, and I made four American siblings: Ken, Jill, Scott and Pam.
When I visited them in 2009, I remember going through their hundreds of beautiful pictures of family celebrations and trips they had, and thinking to myself: What an adventurous and joyful life. And yes, they did have an amazing life, loved by everyone who got to know them.
My last visit was in 2016, thanks to Pam's invitation I attended their 90's birthday and 70's wedding anniversary. I'm so happy I did it, once again they made me feel part of the Clinkenbeard's and I will always cherish those happy moments in my heart.
I will sorely miss them, and can only hope that the whole family can bear the great pain of their absence. Remember that LOVE lives on.

Sorry to hear of your tremendous loss. My family moved to Redding in 1963. My Mom & Dad rented a little red house from Dr. C that was located on Hilltop Drive, just a bit south of Dr. C's vet clinic. Although I didn't know him personally (I was 3 years old at the time) I do remember my parents spoke kindly of him .

We were their next door neighbors on Carter Drive and Charlie gave me my first job as a veterinary assistant at HVH soon after it was built in the 70s. He worked me to death for $1.50 an hour even on Christmas (cleaning cages, holding animals during treatment, maintenance work). He was always willing to give me a job and had me help on the construction of their new house on the river when I was in college. Charlie had an incredible work ethic and I carried that with me through college and my 35 year career with the Chevron Corporation.

Many years ago when I was still an electrical contractor Dick Guiton introduce me to the Clinkenbeards as they had some electrical work they needed done at their home. The work was enough that it was going to take me several hours. Long about noon Jean came out and drug me inside their home where she had made us a wonderful lunch. I protested that she shouldnt have done that and she poo pooed my protest and served me a wonderfful lunch. Ater that I did a few other electrical repairs at their home and business and I was always treated like amily. These two wonderful people will be missed and may they rest in peace after a life filled with love for others and service to their community.
