Charles Johnston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2025.
Charles "David" Johnston III, age 81, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2025, in Oakton, Virginia.

Born on July 2, 1943, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, David grew up with a deep appreciation for thoughtfulness and reflection-qualities that would remain central throughout his life. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he developed a lifelong devotion to philosophy, working in higher education and counseling, and his beloved Tar Heels.

Those who knew and loved David remember him as a big man with a quietly calm soul and a booming chuckle. He is also remembered for his deep intellect, warm heart, and love for ice cream and bow ties. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life: engaging conversations about philosophy, writing poetry, photography, sharing stories that lingered long after they were told, and crafting the perfect cup of espresso. His love for storytelling was matched only by his unwavering loyalty to UNC basketball-a passion he carried proudly throughout his life.

David's enduring compassion was most evident in the care he gave to his wife, Kathy. For nearly a decade, he lovingly supported her through her battle with Alzheimer's disease, embodying patience and devotion in every moment they shared.

David also enjoyed being "Bapa" to his four grandchildren and cheering on their successes and playing his signature game "Magic Bridge" with them.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-two years Kathryn W. Sack; step-daughter Susan Sack Sutter and her husband Rob; step-son Steve Sack and his wife Jessica; and grandchildren Finn Sutter, Tate Sutter, Logan Sack, and Everly Sack. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire kindness and thoughtfulness in the world he leaves behind.
