Charles Kannengiesser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 26 to Feb. 27, 2018.
Kannengiesser, Charles. On February 10, 2018, in Montreal, at 91 years of age, Dr. Charles Kannengiesser, husband of the late Pamela Bright, passed away. He leaves in mourning his family in France, three sisters, Josepha, Christiane and Hélène, many nephews, nieces, and their children, his Australian family, Jim and John Bright and their families, his former colleagues in the Department of Theological Studies at Concordia University, his good friends spread throughout the world, Hasmik Avetissian, Adriana Bara, Anne-Marie Di Michele, Christine Jamieson, Ashod Martirossian, Brian McDonough, Dennis Murphy and his wife, Debbie, Willemein Otten and her family, and many others. Charles Kannengiesser was a renowned Patristics scholar. Over his illustrious career (more than 60 years teaching and writing) he taught at universities throughout the world and published many books and countless academic articles. Deep appreciation and sincere thanks to the personnel at Centre d’hébergement de Lachine, in particular the manager of the third floor, Félicité, and her team. In many ways, their care and appreciation of Charles allowed him to enjoy the last 6 years of his life since the passing of his beloved wife, Pamela. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Monica’s Parish Church (6405, rue de Terrebonne, Montreal) on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11a.m. On that day, there will be a visitation beginning at 10a.m. at Saint Monica’s and a reception following the mass. Your expressions of sympathy may be expressed through a gift to Centre d’hébergement de Lachine or the Dr. Pamela Bright Scholarship for Excellence in Pastoral Studies at Concordia University.

I was honoured to have Charles and Pamela as academic friends at that wonderful little campus of Loyola, Theological Dept of Concordia University, in NDG Montreal. And I was even more privileged to have Charles as my MA Thesis advisor who was so encouraging and even suggested I publish it as a book. I can think of no better title to express how he brought the Church alive for me in his lectures than 'A Church Fully Alive' where I explored the praxis theology of community in St Irenaeus of Lyons. We will miss you. Prayers and sympathy to your family.

Dear Charles, we have missed you. You and Pamela made a brilliant contribution not only to the scholarship of Patristics but also to the fruitful collaboration amongst Aria-Pacific scholars in the field of early Christian studies. Since I first saw him at a society as a giant of patristic scholar, I am always grateful to have known him through the commitment to the APECSS, CSPS, and NAPS. May you know the culmination of a life with Pamela.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Charles Kannengiesser. He was a brilliant scholar, one of the world's great scholars of patristics. But he was also very approachable, a kind and generous man, with a profound faith. He missed his wife Pamela dearly. I am grateful to have known him through his involvement in the Canadian Society of Patristic Studies, where he was warmly appreciated. Requiescat in pace.

We will miss Charles dearly, but are thrilled that he will be soon reunited with Pamela in Australia. We hope for their eternal peace. All of us will cherish our annual vacations in Castillon forever. Dick and Willemien, Maud and Fu Cheng, Utrecht and Chicago.
