CHARLES MARTIN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 21, 2018.
MARTIN REV. CHARLES P.
Age 88, retired Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Johnstown, died on February 16, 2018, in Johnstown. He is survived by his second wife, Susan W. Kelly Martin; and four of his children, J. Christopher (Acoatzin Torres) of Houston, TX, Stephen Richard (Jane) of Berlin, PA, Susan E. Rosa (Jose) of Wescosville, PA, and Timothy W. (Rachel) of Aurora, OH; he also leaves four grandchildren, Jami and Heather Sroka, Matthew VonSchondorf, and Zane Martin; and one great-grandchild, Tulip VonSchondorf. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth; his beloved wife, Mary Balch Martin; and two sons, James Charles, who died in infancy, and Thomas Robert, who died at age 20 in an accident. Father Martin was born January 31, 1930, in Detroit, MI, to Percy Martin and Mildred Martin. He lost his parents at a young age and, after a brief stay with his grandmother in Pittsburgh, was raised in the Episcopal Church Home in Lawrenceville and later in the Kay House, a private facility for boys in Shadyside. As a boy and young man he served at Calvary Church as Acolyte and Lay Reader, and made his first visit to Calvary Camp in 1939. He graduated from Peabody High School and the University of Pittsburgh, then from Bexley Hall Seminary in Gambier, OH. He was ordained Deacon in 1955 by Bishop William S. Thomas, and Priest in 1956 by Bishop Austin Purdue. He served as Rector at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Pittsburgh's North Side from 1956-1962, All Saints in Rosedale (Penn Hills/Verona) from 1962-1978, and St. Mark's in Johnstown from 1978-1996. Upon his retirement in 1996, he served as Supply Priest to St. Bartholomew in Scottdale, PA, until 2016. He also served as Chaplain to St. Margaret Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1960-1978, and was active in the Diocese in many roles, including Secretary of Convention for 32 years and a member of the Standing Committee for three terms. He was elected Deputy or Alternate to General Convention of the Episcopal Church for 11 consecutive meetings from 1967 to 1994. In Johnstown, he served on committees and/or supported the work of organizations including New Day, Birthright, The United Way and the Flood 77 Recovery Committee. At Calvary Camp he was a camper, staff member, board member, and volunteer, and was a presence there nearly every summer for more than 75 years, a true "Old Timer". It's where he had early indications of a call to Priesthood, made lifelong friendships, and met his wife, Mary when they were both on staff. Camp was his second home. He was a true pastor and friend to countless people inside and outside the church. His family cherishes many memories, as he taught us how to hunt, fish, build and repair things, be always thankful, and stand for what we believe, yet not take ourselves too seriously. Most importantly, he showed us how to love and serve others in the name of the Lord. He lived a long, happy, and impactful life and will be missed by many. Well done, good and faithful servant (Matthew 25:23). The family will receive visitors from 2-7 p.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018, at PICKING-TREECE- BENNETT MORTUARY, INC., 921 Menoher Blvd., Johnstown (PTBMortuary.com), and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 335 Locust St., with the funeral to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Mark's.

I'm so sorry to learn of Fr. Martin's passing. He was a remarkable man beloved by all at All Saint's while I was growing up in Penn Hills in the 60's -70's. My father, who himself was the son of an Episcopalian priest, may have given him the highest compliment he ever gave to another man when he said, "he reminds me in so many ways of my father." He made trips back from Johnstown to Penn Hills to officiate at my wedding 39 years ago as well as at my parents' funerals. (My husband and I often think of him, and for some reason, tonight I thought about him and decided to look him up online.) Our deepest sympathies to his family. May he rest in peace.

Such a great person to have in our lives. Many good memories of Calvary church and Calvary camp sheananaghans and we all cared about each other so much. It seemed as he was always a part of our lives. He had a special friendship with my brother Don and was always at so many family gatherings. He will be missed by many. Thank the Lord for letting us share many great memories Blessings to all his family and may your memories keep you ever close

Fr. Martin was one of a kind! He taught me how to take the Faith seriously but not myself, and he set an example of what effective ministry rooted in authentic humanity really looks like. He was my pastor, priest, mentor, and friend and he will be sorely missed. Our loss is heaven's gain... "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

To the family of Rev. Martin:
I did not have the honor of knowing your father/grandfather. I do, however, consider his daughter Sue to be one of my best friends. I was especially moved by the line "be always thankful, and stand for what we believe, yet not take ourselves too seriously" - as that is exactly how I would describe his daughter. A true testament to the man who raised you.
My deepest, heartfelt sympathy for your loss.
