Chuck was born in San Francisco, California, on November 20, 1943, to Charles T. and Verna Laugeson Matthai and was a 1962 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. Chuck served his country in the US Navy in Vietnam from 1964 to 1970 and returned home to work as an ESS Switchman for Northwestern Bell, US West and Qwest for 32 years, retiring in 2003. Chuck married Vicki Kelly in 1980 and lived life to the fullest, enjoying golf, hunting, fishing, bicycling, even riding RAGBRAI many times. Memberships include 3 golf leagues, Henry Doorly Zoo and Lauritzen Gardens.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Verna.
Survivors include his wife, Vicki, of 30 years; sons, Charles James Matthai and Scott Andrew Matthai; grandson, Alex Matthai; brother, James G. Matthai and wife, Lori; sisters, Sandra L. Rhoten and husband, Donald G., Tanya M. Swanson and husband, Clay, all of Council Bluffs; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James J. Kelly and wife, Kandace; father-in-law, Rob Chase, all of Tekamah, Neb.; nieces and nephews and many friends.
Visitation with family will be Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Funeral services Wednesday, 11 a.m., also at funeral home, Reverend Mr. Monty Montagne, Officiant. Interment Garner Township Cemetery with military rites tendered by American Legion Post 2. A luncheon will follow at St. Albert High School. Family will direct memorials.

Vicki: we have only known you and Chuck the last few years through the Cochran's. We felt immediately at home with you all. Chuck couldn't have been any nicer and you guys had great chemistry and fun together.
