Charles McCarthy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 14, 2025.
Charles Patrick McCarthy, 88, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2025, in Davenport, Florida.

Born on March 17, 1937, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Charles was the son of Charles and Mary McCarthy. He was raised in Chelmsford and attended the Chelmsford Schools, laying the foundation for a life defined by service, leadership, and deep personal connections.

Charles began his service to others as an EMT in the United States Navy-a role that reflected his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. After completing his military service, he embarked on a varied and successful professional journey. He first worked as a car salesman and civilian EMT before joining the police force in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. These early roles showcased his versatility and dedication to public safety.

Later relocating to Davenport, Florida, Charles became a respected leader in the security industry. He began his work with Burns Security and quickly rose through the ranks to serve as Vice President at both Fox Security and Central Security. His expertise extended beyond corporate leadership into investigative work as a Private Investigator. He also played a prominent role in professional development through his involvement with ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security), where he held one of the organization's highest positions. As a gifted speaker and teacher with Dale Carnegie, Charles shared his knowledge widely and inspired many throughout his career.

A man of Catholic faith, Charles was known for his commanding presence and extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He had an infectious enthusiasm for Boston sports-especially the Red Sox-and found great joy traveling across the country through his work with ASIS and Dale Carnegie.

Charles is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Joan McCarthy; daughters Susan Gilbride and Donna Foley with her husband Ken; grandchildren Krystal Booth, Michael and Steven Stott, Aubrie Foley, Kenney Foley and fiancée Nicki Fitzpatrick, Dylan Gilbride, and Justin Gilbride; great-grandchildren Braxten, Braelyn, Kaori, Kenney Jr., Ethan, and Koleigh; sister-in-laws Patricia Walsh, Barbara Johnson, Doris McCarthy; Mable and Robert Bennett; several nieces and nephews; Nurse Rose who like a daughter provided exceptional care; special caretakers Cindy and Tina; cherished neighbor Kate Everest; lifelong best friend of over 65 years Robert Johnson; and dear friends Sandy Cowie and Dan Consalbo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Judy McCarthy; son John McCarthy; grandson Dean Gilbride; brother Philip McCarthy; and sisters Mary St. Hilaire and Judy Olsson.

A Funeral Mass will be held privately on April 16, 2025, at Saint Matthew's Church in Winter Haven, Florida. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Charles was a mentor to many. If you were lucky enough to know him, you would never forget him. His dedication and pride will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As he often reminded those around him: he was "a damn good human being"-and all who knew him would agree.

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to become a volunteer leader in ASIS International. As a young professional, my career was formed by leader like Charlie McCarthy. He was huge supporter of our organization and encouraged me to proceed through the ranks of local chapter leadership up to regional leadership.

Thank you Charlie for your mentorship and support. May you rest in peace in the hands of the Lord.

Charlie was one of a kind. He made people smile, he endeared himself to all. He wasn´t afraid of speaking his truth, he loved people and he loved our security industry. He was a great leader in it. I feel blessed to have known Charlie and wish I had more opportunity to "dance" with him.

My deepest sympathies to Joan and the family. Charlie was instrumental in my becoming involved in ASIS. He appointed me as his Assistant Regional Vice President in Florida and convinced headquarters to name me the Regional Vice President for Education. He continued to mentor me until I was elected as the International President of ASIS. Charlie and I visited San Francisco for an ASIS leadership meeting and roomed together. We had great discussions about our shared faith. The next morning, the temperature was around 40 degrees. Charlie had not brought a warm coat, as we were both Floridians. Charlie was still recovering from a hospital stay for pneumonia, so I insisted that he wear my coat. He had me take a picture of him wearing my coat, as it was two to three times too big. He then wanted to go to McDonald's for breakfast, where we found a security officer slightly out of uniform, to say the least. This McDonald's was in a rough, crime-ridden neighborhood; its patrons looked the part. We were out of place, the only two in business suits and an oversized overcoat. Charlie struck up a conversation with the security officer and convinced him to let me take a photograph of the two. Charlie would later use the photo in his training. Charlie is home in Heaven. He fought the good fight and blessed everyone, as he never met a stranger.

A TRUE Irishman he was.... Uncle Chuck was one in a million He had a heart of gold and cared for people genuinely. Family was so important to him and he always had his arms wide open for hugs and kisses when they came home to visit It would not be 4th of July with out Chuck and Joan being home. Parking at Carl and Judy's and walking up to the parade with family, friends and neighbors then sitting on the corner of Dalton at North. Back to Meme's to swim and have tons of food and cocktails!! He was full of life just as the rest of the McCarthy's were. I have known them all for almost 50 years and will remember them all for the rest of my life. They were all like a 2nd family to me.

My most recent chat on FB with Chuck closed with this...."Keeping you and Joan in my thoughts and Prayers. Please give my best to Joan. I love you both." Chuck replied, " I will my dear child". This is who he was... Rest in peace Uncle Chuck . Mary Jo Fitton Sullivan
