Charles McCormick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 4, 2015.

Charles was born in Duvall, Washington, on October 20, 1921, and passed away on December 28, 2014, at home with his immediate family in his presence.

His parents were Charles and Marian (Button) McCormick Lieb and lived in the Port Townsend area since the early 1930s.

He attended Port Townsend High School (class of 1940) and played on various PTHS sports teams using his stepfather's surname (Lieb).

Chuck went back to "McCormick" when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1942.

After pilot training in Jacksonville, Florida, he was assigned to local bases at Whidbey Island and Shelton.

He ended up in the South Pacific in 1944-1945, flying B-26's and PBYs assigned to an admiral. He supported troops with supplies and United Service Organization entertainers and ferried officers around Esprit de Santos, Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and New Zealand.

As World War II wound down, he had enough service points to leave active duty in late 1945 as a lieutenant junior grade.

He married Margie Horton of Chimacum on August 28, 1943, in Jacksonville after she graduated from Chimacum High School. She was the sister of Chuck's best friend.

After his Navy service, Chuck worked at the Crown Zellerbach mill in Port Townsend and became a pulp mill foreman.

He retired after a 35-year career, and he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting.

Chuck and Margie recently moved from Port Townsend to Port Angeles to be closer to family.

Charles is survived by Margie, his wife of 71 years, and three daughters, Gayle (Steve) Laird of Port Angeles, Cathy (Gerry) Rasmussen of Lacey, and Colleen Thompson and partner Gloria of Olympia. Also, eight grandchildren: Gayle's Lena (Brad) Washke and G'Nell Gould Ashley, Cathy's Jessica (Toby) Volkman and Jared (Lisa) Whiteman; and Colleen's Taura (Mark) Boutiier, Spencer Freeman, Anastasia Thompson and Kyle Thompson. Also 10 great-grandchildren: Austin and Hannah Washke; Tyler Gould; Shane Ashley; Jakob and Melayna Volkman; Annabelle and William Whiteman; Destiny Parker-Freeman; and Domanic Bloom. Also survived by his sister-in-law, Pat Horton of Port Townsend.

His only sibling, Marilyn, passed away in September 2014 in California.

At his request, there will be no services. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at a later date. He will be buried in the Chimacum Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 East Eighth Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Chuck was my father-in-law for over 14 years. He will be greatly missed by my wife's family and friends. He fully lived his 93 years to the fullest degree. As a WWII Navy vet, the nation has lost another member of the "greatest generation." We all hope fishing is allowed in heaven.
