Charles "Butch" McCrea

AGE: 71 • Howell

71 years old and resident of Howell, NJ, Charles ""Butch"" McCrea passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, June 13, after a 4 1/2 year battle with Alzheimer's. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, he is an Army Veteran who served in the Vietnam War as a helicopter mechanic. He was a Newark Police Officer, who later became a Newark fireman. He earned his associates degree in fire science, then rose in rank to captain, and eventually Battalion chief, before he retired after 37 years. He was an active member of the American Legion, Post 408, the Ironbound Irish American Association, and the Howell Elks Lodge. He took much pride in his family, his Irish heritage, charitable efforts, fishing, kayaking, and especially singing. He was a beloved son of Mary and Grover McCrea, brother of Grover McCrea, Patricia Hartman, and Mary Fortner. Father of Larraine Lourenco, Charles V. McCrea, Maryann Adao, Bernadette McCrea Klees, and Bernard McCrea, Grandfather of Matthew, Megan, Tony, Jenna, Andrew, and Rosalie. Viewings will be held at Johnson's Funeral Home (2652 NJ 138 in Wall NJ) Friday, June 17 2-4 pm, and 7-9 pm. A mass will be held at St. William the Abbot (2740 Lakewood Allenwood Rd. Howell, NJ 07731) Saturday at 10 am, followed by burial at St. Anns Cemetary (1610 Allenwood Rd. Wall NJ) family asks that you make a donation to the Altheimers Association (3 Eves Drive Suite Suite 310 Marlton, NJ 08053) in leu of flowers.
