Charles Moses Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 5, 2024.
Charles Moses, 69, passed away on January 7, 2024. He had been bedridden for almost a year due to Parkinsonism. He is survived by his sister Linda (Moses) Sellet and her husband Randy Sellet, his "sister" Sandra Young, his brother Colonel Dr. Ray Moses Jr., his stepfather Thomas Brooks, and the sunshine of his life - his beloved daughter Lorelle Moses.

Charles was a member of the Mauldin Church of Christ and a devoted father. He was incredibly proud of his daughter Lorelle who attended the Governor's School of the Arts and graduated from Clemson. She is an accomplished artist and Charles treasured the numerous paintings of hers that hung in his house along with several of his father's paintings.

He was a graduate of the Baptist College of Charleston (now known as Charleston Southern University) but lived in the Greenville area most of his life. He was an avid fan of the L.A. Rams since childhood after seeing Roman Gabriel play as their quarterback. Charles loved sports and games and in his younger days played everything from golf to tennis to baseball. Anyone who played with him saw his fierce competitive nature ! He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed jokes and would laugh until he cried. He loved trains from an early age and had a large model train layout as an adult. He also enjoyed astronomy and even ground his own mirror for a telescope he built.

Charles had a deep love for music and taught himself to play guitar. He played bass guitar professionally in a number of bands including Ark, Sky Dancer, The Oath, The Upsetters, The Power Tools, Silk and Steel, and Paradise Blue. The 1978 Ark Voyages album for which he was the driving force was included in the February 2013 issue of the British Record Collector magazine. Individual copies of Voyages became collectible and have sold for up to $1000. His bands also produced cassettes, 45s, and numerous CDs. Songs from his last band, Paradise Blue, not only had radio air play in the U.S. but also in Australia, Germany, Denmark, and Croatia. A clip of one of Paradise Blue's songs was played on the TV show Good Morning America. Charles was a talented songwriter and poet and had been a finalist for South Carolina 'Songwriter of the Year'. Charles loved concerts and was an especially big fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd who he saw over 40 times.

Charles was very close to his father, Ray Moses, who passed away when Charles was 13 and to his mother, Leona (Moses) Brooks, who passed away in 2013. He cherished the idyllic time he lived in Tamassee, S.C. as a child and retained a lifelong love for Tamassee which stands for the 'place of the sunlight of God'.

Charles left us far too soon and will be greatly missed by those who loved him.

Charles and I played in a great blues band, The Upsetters, together, and he was always a great friend and brother. I will miss him greatly, and never forget him.
