Charles Pendleton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 9, 2024.
Longtime actor and adventurer, Charles Edwin Pendleton, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2024, after a long, degenerative illness.

Charles was born in Philadelphia, to Dorothy (Shriver) and George E Pendleton. The youngest of three children, little Charles was a sweet, easygoing boy, who loved just about everyone, especially his older brother, Bob. Almost inseparable, they grew up in the Germantown area, close to Fairmount Park, which was their favorite haunt. The Wissy, as Charles called it, was the wilderness to them, giving them both a lifetime love of nature.

Charles attended Houston Elementary, and graduated from Germantown High School. He showed an interest in the entertainment business early on, perhaps inheriting the acting bug from his mother, who had tried her hand in local theater productions before getting married and settling down to raise her tiny family.

His first real filmmaking break was being asked by his aspiring filmmaker brother, Bob, to play a supporting role of a Native American sidekick in a hunting film up in Alaska. The film,"Tayaru" was a big hit, becoming a cult film amongst the archery buffs. This successful adventure led to a lifelong passion for acting in the motion picture field. During his lifetime, Charles worked many different jobs, from topping out trees, to retail sales and restaurant operations, all of which allowed him to take time off for working on movie sets. His film experience included countless appearances in supporting roles, walk ons, and stunt work. He loved every minute of it, and all the friends he made no matter where his career took him. His crowning achievement was receiving a SAG award in 2011, for the leading role in "Uncle Hymie's Funeral", an independent film by Stanley D. Jacobs.

Aside from his acting talent, Charles was an artist, with many oil paintings to his credit. Charles also was a rugged outdoorsman and lover of adventure. He traveled north to Alaska many times, and south to Morocco, Egypt, Africa and Brazil, to name just a few places. Despite the lure of far off lands, Charles was a Philly boy at heart, still walking the Wissy whenever he could, and cheering on his beloved Eagles and Phillies teams.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, George, his mother, Dorothy, and brother, Bob. He leaves behind his sister, Judith Pendleton, sister-in-law, Cindy (Murrell) Pendleton, niece, Katherine Pellerin, ( Keith) nephews, Wayne Custer ( Anne) and Justin Pendleton( Mary), cousins, John, Laura, Gregory, David, and Douglas Pendleton.

As per Charles' request there will be no funeral service. His remains will be cremated and spread along side his beloved mother and brother.

There will be an open celebration of life for Charles, Hosted by John C. Kendall

on Monday, August 12th, 6:00pm at the Taproom & Grill, Crystal Lake Avenue , Haddonfield, NJ 08033 (Close proximity to Westmont/Haddon Township PATCO Speedline Station)

What fond memories I have of Charles having met him over a decade ago while both being cast in TIME the film. Whether at Artist Networking Events or working on TV/Film Productions in Philadelphia, our paths would cross quite often. We had the pleasure more recently of working together on a Short Film produced by John Kendall, Labor Day Apparition, continued to stay in touch. It was interesting to note that Charles had attended the same High School though in different years. He was truly a gentleman and a gentle giant who throughout the time I knew him, I never heard him speak a negative word about anyone or anything. Although the last time we spoke by phone, I realized his health was declining, Charles continued to have a positive attitude about how he handled his illness and would accept God's will on his life. He will be sorely missed but will be remembered by me and many forever. May he Rest in Heavenly Peace.

Charlie was one of the first SAG members I'd met on set. He immediately made me feel welcome, like I was "one of the guys". He always had a smile, was always glad to see me (as I was of him) and I enjoyed his company. Damn, I'm gonna miss him.
