Charles Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2025.
Major Charles David "Chuck" Powell, pilot USAF retired, passed away on August 7, 2025 at age 94 in Sun City Center, Florida. He was born on October 28, 1930, in Ruth, Michigan to Charles William and Mildred Kramer Powell. Chuck graduated from Akron Michigan High School and earned a BS from Alma College. Following his academic pursuits, he answered the call to serve his country and became a pilot in the United States Air Force. Rising to the rank of Major, Chuck dedicated a significant portion of his life to military service with honor and distinction. He was an avid golfer and sailor, winning many trophies over the years as a sail boat racer. He was a great dad and grandfather (Poppy) who entertained us with many humorous stories of growing up in Akron, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn whom he married in July of 1960. He is also survived by his beloved daughter Lynn and her husband Michael McGinty of Unionville, CT; grandchildren Stephen McGinty of Cheshire, CT; Catherine Boyajian of Denver, NC; Tasha Powell and great-grandchildren Tristan and Juniper of Tulsa, OK; sister-in-law Lauren D Powell, niece Sue and nephew Chuck of Bay City, MI; cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by both parents; his only son David R Powell; his brother William (Bill); Elwood and sisters Audrey, Ethel and Thelma. A private family military service to honor Chuck's life will be held at the Sarasota National Cemetery on September 9th.
