Charles was a great ombudsman for the gay community. He was smart, exceptionally talented, and a kind person. He came to live in Hartford when he was a kid. He loved it. On July 6, 1944, he attended the Ringling Brothers Circus in Hartford when he was 13. My mom, Patricia Rooney(from West Hartford) was there, as well. She was 9. At that performance, the tent caught fire and 167 people perished!! Charles said that he was not able to sit in an audience again. He attended The Hartt School of Music in West Hartford. He went on to star on Broadway in several original casts as leading men. He was a great talent and a wonderful comedian. He has been missed.

After moving to Hollywood in 1960s he appeared as the nervous Claymore Gregg on TV's ''The Ghost and Mrs. Muir'' and as a featured guest on ''The Dean Martin Show.''
He gained fame by becoming what he described as a ''game show fixture'' in the 1970s and 80s. He was a regular on programs like ''Match Game'' and ''Hollywood Squares,'' often wearing giant glasses and colorful suits with ascots.
His larger-than-life persona and affinity for double-entendres also landed him on the ''Tonight Show'' with Johnny Carson more than 95 times.

Charles Nelson Reilly, the Tony Award winner who later became known for his ribald appearance, he was joy to watch on the “Tonight Show” and various games shows like The Match Game which he was a fixture on the show, between Brett, him they talk up a storm, made us laugh, once a while they help each other out, we can’t forget Richard Dawson along the host of the Gene Rayburn, thanks for the laughter on the show and i enjoyed watching that show. Also, He was on the Ghost of Mr & Mrs Mur. I have to say they are reunited, still playing the game along cracking jokes jokes still.

I am truly blessed to have been a child in the 1970s and have Charles Nelson Reilly as a fixture on Match Game and his delightful appearances on The Tonight Show. His humor and grace, charm and naughtiness left an impression on me...but most important, one could tell he was a kind-hearted soul. Rest in peace, Sir...you will be missed.

Charles Nelson Reilly is one of the most entertaining, interesting people I ever saw. His sense of humor fit when I first became aware of him in the late 70s early 80s and still works in rerun today (2020). I would love to have enjoyed seeing him one more timeon stage.

For Charles...
My friend...you had
a great run.
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Charles was the greatest theater director who ever graced the stage and rehearsal hall of the Burt Reynolds Dinner theater in Jupiter. He helped us all to see things that we had not seen...in props,in dialogue, in relationships and theatrical space. Sitting in rehearsal with Charles was a delight. The world has not only lost a light of laughter and mirth, but a light in the theater. My prayer is that those who had the honor of sitting at his feet will coninue to carry that theatrical light forward to future generations of aspiring actors. The theater was a better place because of Charles.I never learned so much from a director.
And besides all of this, he was a very, very funny man!

My favorite story Charles told was when he was a struggling actor and so poor that all he and his dog had to eat was spagetti, so when he took the dog out for a "walk," everyone thought the dog had a horrible case of worms!
It may seem inappropriate, but it was completely Charles!
I never laughed harder than when I was with Charles...especially the time he was running late for a rehearsal and pulled up in his car wearing a baseball cap, opened the trunk and took out a toupe and a roll of duct tape, whipped off his hat, slapped a circle of tape on his head and plopped the toupe in place with a single slap!
Charles gave me great confidence, a birthday that lasted a week, my first dinner at Sardi's and enough laughter for a liftime!
May peace be with him.

Love from all the Nemec Family.
And from your 1981 "BRDT" class of Apprentices.
Thanks for you humor! (Authentic Transformation is not possible without loads of humor!)
Thanks for being real, always. YOU.
...And when things got tough backstage and jealousies loomed among the younger actors and actresses, Charles would shout with his baseball cap over his face, revealing his bald spot, and his shirt falling out the front of his baggy shorts, EVERYBODY IS FINE AND EVERYTHING IS ALL RIGHT!
Ah, Charles, Chuck, Charles! Final Act? "And that's Theater, babies!"
Love, Love, Love

"I never learned so much while laughing so hard. Charles had the uncanny ability to wrap essential acting (and life) lessons in gales of laughter.
Tricky stuff, that. If you weren't listening you would miss the point and just wind up with aching ribs.
I think I miss that the most.
That and the way he was able to find the things -- the little truths -- that weren't on the page, but somehow -- if you trusted him to follow through, to play them -- they would make the play and your performance better.
Of course, I still look for free food and drinks every chance I get!
Thanks, Charles."

Dear Charles, You were so kind to me when I was a struggling actress working at Sardi's and studying at H.B. Studios. As you noted how kind Vincent Sardi had been to you when you were struggling you were that way to me. Sadly Vincent passed also recently so maybe you are up there with him having some Cannoloni! Years later you worked on a show with my husband and brought a Sardi's Hat for me. A gift I will cherish forever. I am so glad I was privileged to see your one man show -it was so great!
God Bless you and keep them laughing up there. You were loved and lovely and will be missed.Your fellow Bronxite and thespian, Ann Gagen

Always loved him. Didn't know he was gay; who cared. He was funny and that was the important thing. I loved Johnny Mathis before I knew he was gay and I still love him. Gay is just an adjective and not the person. I'll miss his humor and can picture some of his remarks on the game shows in my mind; those kind of game shows were a lot more fun than the stupid junk you have today. Sorry he suffered for so long. God Bless Barry
