Charles Cromwell Reiney

Charles Cromwell Reiney Charlotte - Charles Cromwell Reiney was born September 23, 1969, in Jacksonville, Florida, and died February 9, 2023.

The third of four children born to Betsy and Bill Reiney, Chuck's childhood was filled with love, humor, sports, and dogs. He began playing tennis on the family's backyard court as soon as he was old enough to hold a racquet. He immediately excelled at the sport and continued to be a competitive tennis player throughout his life.

Affectionately nicknamed "Clay Court" by his teammates, Chuck was a proud Paladin and three-time MVP for the Furman University tennis team. He maintained ties with coaches, teammates, and opponents, creating a strong network of lifelong friendships. Some of his favorite memories were of coaching aspiring, young tennis players at Paul Scarpa's Summer Tennis Camp at Furman.

After graduating from Furman in 1991, Chuck began his professional career as a banker in Columbia, SC. A job with Mercer led him to Atlanta and to his lovely bride, Megan, also a Furman graduate. A mutual friend, an invitation to a party, and a night out at a local bar later, Chuck showed the same tenacity in pursuit of Megan as he did on the tennis court. The couple married in 1997 and soon became a family of five with the addition of Cooper, Charlie, and Nate.

In 2005, the family moved to Charlotte, where Chuck continued his career in financial services with roles at Accenture, Bank of America, TIAA, and Wells Fargo. Co-workers describe Chuck as a respected leader and trusted partner, whose commitment to his family mirrored his dedication to his work relationships. Those he was close to agree that to know Chuck was to know his boys.

Together, Chuck and Megan delighted in their sons and enthusiastically supported them in their endeavors. Whether it be tennis, baseball, academics, track, swimming, or Odyssey of the Mind, Chuck and Megan encouraged their boys to compete with focus and integrity. From coaching the boys' Little League teams to traveling across the country and competing in father-son tennis tourneys, Chuck relished in each and every opportunity to share his lifelong passions with his children.

Nothing was more important to Chuck than the sanctity of family time, milestones, and traditions. For the last 23 years, he delighted in the annual Reiney boys' baseball trip. Spanning three generations of the Reiney family, Chuck and his brothers traveled with their children and father to a different city each year and attended a Major League game. At Thanksgiving, Chuck was a self-proclaimed expert at frying turkey. On a more regular basis, he spent Saturday nights grilling steaks for his family. Chuck was an ardent Jacksonville Jaguars fan and passed his love of his hometown team on to his boys. Chuck and Megan recently celebrated their 25th anniversary with a trip to Italy.

A cornerstone of Chuck's life in Charlotte was Olde Providence Racquet Club, where he enjoyed everything from the competitive atmosphere of playing in the Charlotte Pro League to casual hits with friends. Chuck was President of the club in 2020, and his leadership was invaluable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Megan Totura Reiney; their sons, William Cooper Reiney, Charles Emerson Reiney, and Nathan Douglas Reiney; his parents, Charles William Reiney and Betsy Hardin Reiney; his brother, Mike, Mike's wife, Emily, and their children, Margaret (Clay), Michael and Annie; his sister, Rachel Kenyon, and her children Cameron (Courtney), Drew, and Ellie; and his brother, Joe, and Joe's wife, Beth.

A celebration of Chuck's life will be held February 14, 2023, 1:00 p.m., at Olde Providence Racquet Club, 5630 Sharon View Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, with a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to Paul Scarpa Tennis Endowment (Southern Tennis Foundation) or Strokes for Spokes.
