I played tennis with Skip right until nearly the end of his life. His serve was legendary! He will be missed on the tennis courts at Islandwalk, but will remain in my heart as an excellent player who was patient and kind when paired with a beginner during Sunday mixed doubles.

Maria,
Fran just texted me that you lost your Dad. I am extremely sorry for your loss. He sounds like he was quite a guy. He will always be in your heart. Prayers for you & your family.

When I first met Skip I was happy about the wonderful guy my sister was dating. He proved to be a solid husband and father, in addition to lovable brother-in-law to me and my husband.
We are almost life-long wheelchair users due to disability and remember so many kindnesses from Skip. Without saying anything, he and Catherine surprised us by putting in a ramp and modified bathroom in their home in historic Pinckney letting Jim and I easily visit them - a gesture we never anticipated, and still talk about.
When he was dating Cathy a few of us went to an amusement park. It was my custom to sit and watch the rides, but Skip would have none of that. He insisted on carrying me up the steps and onto the ride - I vividly recall him safely carrying me like it was no big deal to participate in serious fun!
One day when Cathy and Skip lived in Pinckney, they called and wanted to stop over. It wasn't just any 'stop over'. They showed up in a two seat, convertible Viper sports car and Skip wanted to take me for a ride. I will add that I've had a life-long passion for sports cars, a type of vehicle totally unsuitable for carrying a wheelchair along. I sat in the passenger seat and after he asked where to go, I told him of a perfect road with many curves and hills that I often envisioned speeding on in a sports car.
Skip drove it like a pro and totally ignored the speed limit!
One last tidbit: somehow I heard that when his kids were growing up he would have them get up early in the morning instead of sleeping the morning away on the weekend. Whether he had chores or fun planned, I always admired this practice of showing the kids how to pack more into their day.
What can I say, except What. A. Guy! Skip, we miss you......and send our condolences to your wonderful family.
Love,
Pat and Jim Ford

He was a great teacher, mentor, storyteller, friend and father. He inspired me to do my best, be thankful for what I have, cherish family, help those who are less fortunate and enjoy the simple things in life. He's the most generous and selfless person I've ever known. I'm so proud and grateful to have had him in my life.
