Charles Simpson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 19 to Oct. 21, 2016.
Charles Simpson Dec. 16, 1929 - Oct. 14, 2016

A seventh generation Canadian with his family originally from PEI, Charles Stuart Simpson (Chuck) was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Langley BC where his father practiced dentistry. After attending high school and UBC in Vancouver, Chuck moved to Calgary in 1953 where he married the love of his life, Jean.

He began his long career in the oil business as an oil scout and soon moved into land management with a small oil company that grew into Norcen Energy. In 1965 he moved to Forest Oil Corp and in 1973 was transferred to Singapore as Vice President of SE Asia. After two exciting years he started his own petroleum land consultant company.

Chuck has served as Secretary of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen and as President of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen where he received two CAPL awards.

As a proud Rotarian for 40 years and a Paul Harris Fellow, in 1989 he was instrumental in the development of one of the world's most effective and successful drug centres for addicted children, the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC). This was his proudest accomplishment.

He was also instrumental in forming the Friends of Science Society and was devoted to their education programs on climate change.

All his summers were spent at his beloved Lee Creek, Shuswap Lake and for more than 60 years his passion was downhill skiing.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean (Murdoch), his sons Jay and Michael, his daughter Ann Clark and his eight grandchildren Petra Simpson, Charles, Richard, James, Sarah and Paisley Clark, and Gillian and Reid Simpson.

In keeping with Chuck's wishes there will be no funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Calgary Rotary Club Foundation - 305, 105 - 12th Ave., S.E. Calgary, Ab. T2G 1A1 or AARC - 303 Forge Road S.E. Calgary, AB T2H OS9

Chuck was a wonderful man who 'never gave up' on anything. I met him through Friends of Science Society. One of the co-founders, to the very last he was attending meetings. He was still brainstorming ideas on how to educate the public and policy-makers on how the sun and other natural influences affect climate change. We will miss him. Condolences to Jean and the family.

A dear and loyal friend with Jean for many years to our parents, the late Herb and Cathy Hughes, and upon their deaths, to our family. Chuck had infinite patience and kindness for each one of us, acting as a friend, mentor, advisor and instructor in ways that went beyond description and was often never acknowledged. Chuck's allegiance and devotion to Rotary's Four Way Test was transparently credible and demonstrably obvious in all he did. And his service with our father to the American and Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen was remarkable for its sacrifice in time and treasure. The AAPL "Golden Lease on Life" granted to our father J. Herb Hughes as President of that Association more than 45 years ago, bears Chuck's signature inscribed on a much cherished brass plaque, a lasting momento of the esteem and loyalty he showed then and for years afterwards to the Hughes' family. We are forever grateful.

I was sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. He was my first Rotary boss. Jean, you and Chuck were so supportive of me when I first joined Rotary. The fun and laughter we all had with the Rotary shows is something I will always remember as well as the BBQ's. He was a true Rotarian .

I will always remember "Uncle" Chuck's fondness for some of the finer things in life, like DQ treats and Brubeck jazz. He was a true friend to our father through thick & thin, though I often thought Dad was the conservative/reactionary one. We are very lucky beneficeries of their collaboration on the Shuswap and should strive to uphold their legacy. Condolences and blessings to Jean, Jay, Ann, & Michael, plus all the grand children.

Jean and Family. I talked to Chuck a few days before his demise and I shall always cherish that conversation because it allowed me to make some important interpretations. Chuck was always a good friend of our Family and me for a long long time His advice personally and business wise was always solid. It was always black or white. I'm sure you will get a lot of comfort out of his numerous success' both personally and business wise

Chuck was a fine man, enthusiastic about life and willing to devote his time to help others. He was a good friend to my father and mentor. As a beneficiary of the community of Glenwood Beach, which was established in 1960 by Chuck and Bob Ridley, we are fortunate to enjoy this wonderful place as a result of the initiative and foresight of these two fine persons.
On behalf of the Glenwood community and the Mathewson family, our deepest condolences go out to Jean and the Simpson family.

We fondly recall one day when we stopped by the cabin to say hello to Jean and Chuck. We came away with one of the best pickled cherry recipes we have ever tasted. Chuck was so delighted to see us, and made a great effort to come out to the kitchen and visit with us. Our very sincere condolences to Jean and family.

I will always be indebted to Chuck for helping us get AARC of the ground. This would never have happened if he had not convinced Rotary of the merits of the endeavour.

Chuck also became a good friend and I will miss him.

To many of his friends and colleagues, Chuck will be remembered as a tireless worker for good courses, but mostly for being an upright and giving human being.
We wish Jean and the family strength and courage to deal with their loss.
As for us, we will all miss him greatly.
