Dr Stelck was the finest teacher I ever had at any level. He truly cared for his students and made each of us feel valued and unique. He was someone we tried to live up to and he made geology live for us. I will never forget his impersonation of a graptolite in class nor would I dare to forget the stratigraphic section under Leduc-despite living half a world away. As did many of his former students I visited Charlie in his office a number of times for years after graduating and he always made time for an engaging and amusing discussion. Thank-you Charlie - along with so many for so many years it was an honour to study under you.

I first met Charlie at Strathcona Baptist. My daughter and his grandson were in the same class at school. Charlie and Fran just loved to hear stories about their grandchildren and family and laugh! I appreciated what a down to earth person Charlie was and so comfortable and interesting to talk with.

As a former Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Charlie Stelck was my mentor. His advice had a profound and lasting influence on the research that I and my graduate students pursued. I don't believe I ever have met,or ever will meet, a person in the field of Geology with such wisdom, dedication, passion and sheer brilliance. His contributions to Alberta on an educational and economic level are profound and underscored. A man like Charlie Stelck only comes along once a century. Sadly that century has passed. My condolences to the Stelck family.

I only had the honour of meeting Dr. Stelck a few times. When the UofA hosted the WIUGC in 98, he wasn't just our first choice for keynote speaker. He was the only choice.

I still have a copy of his talk in my files.

Thank you for a lifetime of service and dedication to your field.

Dr. Stelck was an amazing pioneer for petroleum geology in Alberta. He would have such wonderful stories to share when I met him working at the U of A. I was proud to be part of the 2003 graduating class when he received his honorary degree and his speech during convocation was something I'll remember for the rest of my life. Thank you for all you've done for geology and thank you for being a gentle, kind, wonderful man.

Charlie was an amazing person, a true gentleman, and a giant in the field of geology particularly of Western Canada. He and I first met in September, 1993, when he invited me up to the University of Alberta and Edmonton to view the fossil collections that they had both at the University and an off-site storage. In the years and decades that followed, he and I corresponded less than I would have liked, but every time we saw each other we would resume whatever conversation we had been having previously even if it was years before! He had a very keen mind, and remembered the smallest details. The last time I saw Charlie, we had dim sum in Chinatown in Calgary along with his son and daughter-in-law and a couple grandkids. It was magical. He will be missed.

Nobody helped us understand Alberta's geology more than Charlie. He was truly an institution and a delight to know.
