Charles Stiles Obituary

Published by The Press-Enterprise from Oct. 29 to Oct. 30, 2016.
CHARLES D. (CHUCK) STILES, retired employee of 23 years with this newspaper. Mr. Stiles was born in Steele, North Dakota on August 27, 1921 as the youngest son of a newspaper family. As a teenager, Stiles worked with his two brothers on his father's weekly newspaper in Maddock, North Dakota prior to the outbreak of WWII. During the war, Mr. Stiles served in the Joint Assault Signal Corp (JASCO) - a combination army/navy unit that directed naval gunfire during the Pacific Campaign. As a Sergeant, Stiles led his team into frontal landings in Leyte, Luzon, Okinawa and New Zealand and was decorated with the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service. After returning from military service in WWII Stiles returned to newspaper work graduating to a series of ever larger daily newspapers in North Dakota, and Washington State, culminating with his recruitment to the Riverside Press Enterprise in 1963. During his tenure with the Press Enterprise Mr. Stiles served as manager of Promotions and Public Relations. A talented artist and cartoonist, Stiles also contributed cover art for a TV magazine published at the time and illustrated many stories by writers and columnists. In addition, drawing upon his background with the farming community and small town life in North Dakota, Stiles contributed a special cartoon feature ("Ed and Emma") to Hoard's Dairyman, an international dairy magazine for more than 50 years, never missing an issue. Mr. Stiles was married in 1944 to Dorothy Hall with whom he had two children, Charles Dean Stiles of Boston Massachusetts and Cheryl Ann Hofer of Los Angeles. Widowed after 44 years, he married Sue Davis of Riverside California. Chuck and Sue were both active in the Riverside Art Museum and were together for more than 25 years until her death in 2015. In addition to his son and daughter, Mr. Stiles is survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
