Charles Teller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 13 to Aug. 14, 2015.
1961 - 2015
Chuck Teller passed away suddenly from a heart attack while on a mountain biking trip with friends in Durango, Colorado, on Sunday, August 9, 2015. He was 53.

Beloved husband, father, friend and community member, Chuck was an innovator and problem solver. He persisted until he succeeded, driven by curiosity, enthusiasm, intelligence and the desire to provide for his family.

Chuck had a unique sense of humor and playful spirit that brought joy to all who knew him. He loved basketball and was a competitive player and coveted teammate. He was a formidable rival in many other sports and games, including tennis and Scrabble. He was an avid backpacker and shared his love of nature with his family and friends on many trips to the wilderness.

Dedicated to family, hard work, friends, & community, Chuck gave himself fully in all that he endeavored to do. He was a "serial entrepreneur"; his creative business ventures included developing predictive analytics tools with his business partner Marshall Miller, working at PeopleSoft, founding Catalogchoice.org and Realius Inc., and working most recently as VP of Product at Wise.io.

Born in Cincinnati, OH, Chuck was a graduate of Camp Golden Eagle, Walnut Hills High School, UC Berkeley, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Betsy Bigelow-Teller and three children, Noah, Eden and Mia Teller of Berkeley, California; his parents Suzanne and Jerome Teller, and brother Daniel Teller of Cincinnati, Ohio; and sister Ruth Pleaner of San Francisco, California. He will be profoundly missed and held in our hearts forever.

A service, open to the community, will be held Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015 at the Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St, Berkeley, CA. Please arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. The service will begin promptly at 10 a.m.

In honor of Chuck's love of the outdoors and his community, his family will be accepting donations in his memory to the National Parks Foundation, The Ecology Center, Friends of Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp, and Chochmat HaLev.

Let us strive to live our lives to the fullest as Chuck did each and every day.

I was a `business advisor“ to Chuck during a period he worked to revolutionize Direct Mail advertising. He was an original thinker, flipping the model on its head to save natural resources and giving people more control over what literally "landed in their mailbox". Today we call it a spam filter. Thanks Chuck!

Dear Ruthie, I am very sad to hear the recent news about Chuck. I remember him so well from not only Losantiville but from you and Jody. I know this must be a devastating loss for your entire family. Take care in knowing that many of us are thinking of you all at this time.

I was an MBA student at Haas, and met Chuck as an advisor and mentor through the Lester Centre. Chuck was very approachable and easy to speak to, and above all flush with ideas, insights and wisdom on entrepreneurship and setting your own path. To this day, I haven't forgotten his contagious passion for life. Although it saddens me deeply to hear of his untimely passing I do feel grateful to have met him. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Chuck first entered our lives at Haas - Berkeley when he volunteered to mentor some of our entrepreneurship students. Over the years he became a regular contributor to our MBA classes as a adviser, friend and guest speaker. We at the Haas School, and UC Berkeley more generally, will miss his kind presence and provoking challenges. His passing reminds all who benefited from his generosity that life is not a zero sum game. Thanks for everything Chuck. Many students will remember you for many years to come.

Chuck was sui generis - a man of ideas, passion, integrity and vision. But above all, a simply wonderful person to spend time with, bounce ideas off and watch in action. He gave of himself freely, to students, friends and - above all - his family. This is an enormous loss to all of us lucky enough to have been in his orbit in his far too-brief life.

So sorry and shocked to hear of Chuck's untimely passing. I had been working with Chuck the past couple of years on some projects and loved his energy and intellectual curiosity. My deepest condolences to his family.
