Charles Trask Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 17 to Jun. 19, 2017.
Charles Hughes Trask passed away on June 14, 2017, at the age of 88. He was born in Everett, WA on April 19, 1929, the son of Leo and Elizabeth Trask. Charles graduated from Everett High School in 1947. He was senior class president and participated in track and football, winning the state championship in the 440 yard dash in 1947. Following high school he attended Stanford University in California and graduated in 1951. Wanting to be a doctor like his father, Leo Stewart Trask, Charles attended McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. It was there where he met his future wife, Joan-Ley McAsey. After graduation he married Joan-Ley on June 30, 1956. The next two years he served in the U.S. Army in Baltimore, MD. Their first child, Leo, was born in 1957. After his army service was over in 1959 they moved to Madison, Wisconsin where Charles was in medical residency. During their time in Madison, three more children were born - James, Cathleen, and Sara. In 1964 Charles moved back to Everett with Joan-Ley and the kids. Charles got his practice established and worked until his retirement from the Everett Clinic in 1994. Two more kids were born in Everett - David and Jennifer. Charles and Joan enjoyed their retirement years traveling to Europe, spending summers at Lake Goodwin, and skiing in Bend, Oregon. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Trask, and his brother, Leo Stewart Trask. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan-Ley, and his six children and 16 grandchildren. Many thanks to the exceptional caregivers at the Holistic Adult Family Home. A Celebration of Life Mass with a lunch reception will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Everett on June 23, 2017, at 10:30 a.m.

I was saddened to read of Charlie's passing. I first heard of him when I turned out for track in the mid-1950s at Everett High School. Coach Art Ramstad loved to talk about his state championship track teams of 1945 and 1947 and of course Charlie was the 440 yard state champ on the '47 team. "Rammy", as he was known, had such admiration and respect for Charlie and the other dedicated athletes who had brought such honor to EHS. Years later I did meet Charlie, who expressed fond memories of his track days and his high regard for "Rammy". In more recent years, I enjoyed seeing Charlie at the YMCA, where we both grunted around in the work out room. What a fine guy. He will be missed.

I have fond memories of our neighbor and friend on Maulsby Lane. The Trasks seemed like the Lane's anchor tenant. Chuck and his family were always busy. I fondly remember being hosted at their cabin (Chuck grilled a salmon), his vintage black car, playing ball in his driveway, trusting his daughter to sit our kids, and just gabbing with him while on his front lawn.
He was as friendly, helpful and at ease at the hospital as he was at home. He set an example for me and other docs to follow: excellence/devotion to family and his craft.

I joined the Everett Clinic surgery department in 1982, to the generous welcome of Charlie. My first impression was that he was taciturn and humorless. Boy, was I wrong. In addition to being a fine and caring surgeon, he had a sly sense of humor that flashed at just the right times. Unexpected ones, too. One of my favorites was when he was called in by another partner in the middle of the night to help with a self-induced injury by a baseball bat. (I'll spare the reader the details.) When Charlie arrived at the OR, he said, "Irv, I didn't know you did sports medicine."

Another memory is seeing Charlie running up the walkway to the hospital. Figuring there was some sort of emergency, I stopped him to ask if there was something going on and if he'd need any help. "No," he said. "I just don't like to waste my time walking."

That was Charlie Trask: efficient, dedicated, smooth. And fun. He gave an enormous amount to his patients and his colleagues. To that I can testify. Deep condolences to Joan and the rest of his large and impressive family.

It was a honor to have worked alongside such a kind and respectful partner. I also treasure the memory when he cared for my grandfather and was able to put him at ease with his calm and friendly manner. God's blessings to the family.

He was a man that never raised his voice. He was a respected and loved surgeon, husband, & father and a wonderful neighbor. His skilled hands and healing touch made a huge difference in the community he served with great distinction. I will miss our "sitting on the curb talks". May God greet you with open arms and bless your wonderful family who will miss you so much. We are very thankful in having known you.

I had a water skiing accident my sophomore year in high school. Mom insisted on Dr. Trask to perform the surgery on my arm. 150 stitches later, he miraculously put me back together, and the scar hardly shows, thanks to his skillful hands. Dr. Trask was one of the finest people I ever knew. Gods Speed.

As a visitor to Holistic Family Home, I always made sure I visited with Dr. Trask. I so fondly remember the day he took me into his room and showed me pictures of his family and trips he and his wife, Joan-Ley took. He was a very gracious and caring person. My condolences to his family. I will miss seeing and visiting him and his caring wife.
