I was one of the "gas jockeys" referenced above. Charlie (and Veronica) gave me my first job at the age of 13. I worked 40-50 hours a week in the heat and humidity of Maryland summers pumping gas at the Oxford Exxon in the last American era that pumped gas for drivers, checked their oil and washed their windows.
The Wainwrights were also my neighbors and great friends. I can hear Charlie's voice right now, that Bermudian accent in full effect, teasing Lee Iacocca and the wisdom of the 'K' car. Charlie could fix any motor put in front of him, but he loathed Chrsylers.
Charlie was a dear friend, an amazing captain and a fine man. Living in Los Angeles, I had not seen him for about 10 years, but still appreciate the fact that he gave me that first job and was a kind soul. Rest in Peace Charlie.
