As an undergraduate student employee from 1985 to 1987, he was always Dr. Warlick to me. I did not dealt directly with him very much, but one memory of him sticks out as particularly fun. He was looking for a new word processor program because he didn't like the one he was using. I had recently discovered a different one, so I showed it to him. He loved it and used it for years, and made a point of expressing his gratitude. PhD-holding unit directors are not required to be enthusiastically grateful to wet behind the ears undergrad employees who luck into doing a favor for them, but he was. And he never forgot. Even after he retired, I still got the occasional email from him.
I never knew any of his family, but if he was that kind to bottom-rung people like I was back then, then his family is truly fortunately to have had him. We should all celebrate his life and legacy.

The most influential leaders are often the most soft spoken and listen more than they speak. That is how I remember Dr. Warlick from my days there in the late 80's. A man of few and carefully chosen words, but boy did people pay attention to what he said.
He will be missed and remembered. I pray for grace and peace for his family and friends.

Dr. Warlick was a very kind and gentle person to have served under. My sympathy goes out to his family.

It was such a honor to have worked under Dr. Warlick at the Computation Center. He treated everyone the same no matter our position. He attended my retirement party and lunch in 1995 after 30 years. I will always remember his kindness to everyone. Condolences to Suzanne who we all loved. May God Bless you. Gloria Umscheid

I consider it a great privilege to have had the opportunity to have worked at UT's Computation Center when Charlie was Director and then later had him as a customer when I was at NeXT and later at Sun Microsystems. Charlie's warm smile and welcoming attitude he provided to all of us that he touched will be missed. We are all so fortunate to have known such a generous man.

My condolences to Suzanne and the family for the loss of a most gifted and gentle man. Charlie was a mentor, especially in what he taught me about navigating the complexities of a university faculty, which he seemed to do effortlessly. Our loss.

one of Charlie's most admirable traits was speaking to folks as though he was just the guy next door rather than the most brilliant head in the room ---
Charlie was one of the few men i have ever met whose middle name could have been Integrity ---

Dr. Warlick hired me in October of 1979, and I'm still at that job with the descendant of the Computation Center. During my final interview with him he asked me "what would you really like to do?". I replied in my youthful (age 24) effusiveness that I wanted to "write the next UNIX operating system". (I know this guy named Linus beat me to it).
Dr. Warlick (I could not bring myself to call him Charlie) had his fingers in so many pies it could give one a headache to try to sort them out. Because of his involvement with educational technology I was exposed to a greater variety of computers. That enriched my professional experience and provided a fuller picture of how the world was changing, one desktop at a time.
A good man, intelligent man.
Dr. Warlick, oh, ok I guess I can call you "Charlie", thank you for my career of the past 37 years. Thank you for all you accomplished and how you were always looking to be on the leading edge.
Rest in Peace, Charlie.

Suzanne,
I am shocked and saddened by Charlie's passing, and send my deepest condolences to you and your family. I worked for him for many years at the UT Computation Center, and have always considered him to be one of my finest mentors. When I first met him in his office in 1975, I saw a quote written at the top of his long blackboard, which I suspect stayed there until the day he retired: "There they go! I must hurry and catch up to them, for I am their leader." Over the next 30+ years of my career as an IT manager, that quote was posted in my various offices as a tribute to Charlie and as a reminder that his management style was what I wanted to emulate.
A couple of months ago, during the 50th Anniversary celebration of the UT Computer Sciences Dept., several of us from the '70's and '80's era talked about how we could best collect and preserve the history of computing at UT Austin, working with the UT Briscoe History Center. At the top of my list of things to do after New Years was to contact Charlie and possibly arrange a trip to Nacogdoches to record his recollections as part of an oral history, as well as offer to deliver any materials he might have to the archivists at the Briscoe Center. Alas, this was not to be; but if I can help in any way in making sure that any of his materials related to UT are properly preserved, please let me know. My email is clivedaw (at) gmail.com.

So very sorry for your loss Suzanne, Caroline, Catherine and family. Charlie was always such a wonderful man; genuinely friendly and helpful to all. I was always amazed how clearly he could explain things to those of us less technologically gifted! (and yet still remain patient) My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

Suzanne and family please accept my condolences. Dr. Warlick was a powerful influence in my life for the many years I worked for him at the UT Computation Center and afterwards. I have thought about him often over the years and have always considered myself lucky that I knew him and got to work with him. He taught me a lot.

Jesus, thank you for putting Dr. Warlick in a small part of my life at Steen Library. My desk was at the back door of the library, and he would always stop by and speak to me before he went about his day. He was such a nice man. It was my pleasure to speak with him on those days. He introduced himself to me as "Charlie" and that's how I knew him. Such a pleasant man. May his family be blessed to have had Charlie in their lives. May God bless all of you.
