In memory of

Charles Welsh

Add memories that will last forever

Not sure what to say?

When we were kids I clearly remember Charlie being a huge Football fan. He got me to join him on our first city team " Nepean Rams " where we both played defence. Charlie was a cornerback and myself on the defensive line. He had already been my best friend for several years. A relationship that will last forever. But little did I know at that time this would only be the beginning of many crazy adventures together . Miss you Charlie, more than I can say ..

One summer the Family was staying in a campground in Whiterock (just south of Vancouver). There was a drive-in about 10 miles away playing "Alien". Dad was too cheap to take us so Charlie talked me into biking there via miles and miles of rural roads. We snuck into the theatre and sat at the back near a speaker and enjoyed the show. Then we had to bike back along the same roads in the dead of night. By this time a terrible fog had rolled in and of course we didn´t have lights or anything on our bikes. We had many close calls with passing vehicles on the way back. One dump truck missed us by inches! Not sure why this came to mind, but it´s one of my strongest memories of Charlie.

I dated Charlie in High School and although we didn't stay in touch after the 1990s he definitely made a big impact on my life. He reached out to me in November of 2020 and we had a phone call about a book that he was writing about his life. I thought that we would talk again, but now I realized that he is no longer of this world. Sending you lots of love Charlie. xo

I would not be able to complete my Phd with Charlie's support to take in his team from Mergermarket to Xportreporter and later IIIIcorp from 2007 to 2018. My teaching in Business and Finance journalism still uses the model from Mergermarket you created and your spirit lives on.

I can't imagine it's been three years since you left Charlie...

Norie & I remembered you last week and the early days of Mergermarket, a news organization you created with a major difference...

Even today when I file stories for other publications, I still call them "opps"...

You created opportunities for many of us, and though our hard work and determination have helped us climb up, you gave us that opportunity and start.

May you rest in eternal peace, knowing you made a difference in many of our lives...

Thank You Charlie

I came to know of this just yesterday. A lot of enthusiasm for good work and zest for life has died. It is extremeky saddening to learn of Charlie's demise. Unexpected and shocking, but the man was full of enthusiasm and energy and a great mentor! I'm sure his good work will speak for him for times to come. Bless him and rest in peace

Charlie:

I still can't get my head around your untimely end. I'm sure you'd tell me it will be ok, and that I will eventually get past this. But for now, I'm still at a loss. It's too sad to think about for long. But it's difficult when some odd memory pops into my head that reminds me of you. So, in a way, I don't want to get past this, I need to keep remembering you, and feel the pain of loss.

Brother, wherever you are out there in the universe, I'll never forget you.

Charlie was special.

As an editorial leader, he was one of the best – passionate, intellectually acute, with huge integrity and a tenacity – bordering on obsession(!) – in the quest for truth.

As a boss, he was relentlessly demanding, but fair. He cared for his people and was a terrific coacher and developer, as testified by the many comments of his colleagues.

I was privileged to work with Charlie when Mergermarket become part of the FT Group. Never a man to be pushed around, he held his ground but always for the right reasons. As a result, he was brilliant to work with and I really value the years we worked together.

But what stood out the most was his love for, and commitment to, Emmanuelle and his children. He cherished them and my thoughts and prayers are with them and all his family.

Rest in peace, Charlie. You will be missed.

I first met Charlie in 2004 – he took me for a ribeye lunch at Spitalfields market in London and explained his vision for Mergermarket. I was hooked. He was all in on his venture and I liked that energy. He made you feel like a vital part of what he was building. Because of him, I ended up in San Francisco via Mexico City from Prague. I am grateful for the adventure he took me on. I remember his intellectual rigor, his challenge to do your best, but above all his many acts of kindness. Rest in peace Charlie. My condolences to the family.

James and Allison, I want to send all my love and sympathy to you and your family. I hope that you are all staying as well as possible during these difficult times. You are in my thoughts. Take care!

Charlie took me on as part of the Mergermarket team back in 2004 and I am still providing aggregation to the company to this day.
He also relieved me of a wonderful pink shirt that graced his profile page for many years, a fact that he was always eager to remind me of.
He was always a person I wanted to get to know better and while we kept in contact for a good while after he left the company my last interaction with him was a conversation on Linkedin about that damned shirt!
Go in grace, Charlie and my love and best wishes to his family and those who knew him better than I

I remember Charlie’s incredible presence in the news room when I joined Mergermarket.

He was a hard-nosed editor who would shout over to journalists questions on their stories. The most important thing I learnt was the over-arching theme of “Are we right?” when making a decision on a story.

Charlie was a colourful, inspiring leader who built a fantastic company.

My condolences to the family.

My condolences to the Welsh family, I'm sadden to hear the news of Charlie's passing. Although I had met him only once early during my tenure at MM, I've always heard amazing stories from my colleagues about his tenacity, drive, and passion. Charlie impacted so many lives in the MM family and I was lucky to be able to have been a part of a company that he built.

Rest in peace, you will be sorely missed Charlie.

I met Charlie doing my trial interview with some banker in Mergermarket's old old office in July 2005.

Charlie taught me loads about journalism, not that I was a journalist myself back then.

Somehow, I became one later and still use his public interest tests.

He once told me Canada was the only democracy exporting oil. For no special reason, I still remember this....

So sad...

My deepest condolences to the family. Charlie was a force of nature, impacting everyone's lives he touched. He was a mentor to me, supporting me throughout my career at Mergermarket.

He loved a good argument. My first real memory of him was arguing with him about the Iraq war for hours on day 2 of my employment. I thought surely I'd be fired the next day. Of course, I wasn't.

He was a huge supporter of women early on, creating many strong, women-led editorial teams. Two pieces of managerial advice I will always remember: "Lead by example" and "Don't ever email if you can talk to the person". Words to live by, and that I continue to share.

My thoughts are with you,

Abby

What terribly sad news! He was my first mentor, and an inspiration for everything I’ve done since. His work ethic was extraordinary! So many great memories. To the Welch family, I’m so sorry for your loss. Take heart that his that legacy will remain in the hearts and minds of those who he inspired, and for future generations of aspiring Acuris journalists to come.

RIP Charlie, it was pleasure to know you.

I am privileged to have worked with Charlie in London some years ago.

During an early morning work shift on Brick Lane in London, while monitoring market-moving news, I remember him saying "you better move fast !" and it felt like a compliment.

In many ways, it seems like he always strove for truth and I pray he has now found it.

My sincere condolences to the family.

My condolences goes out to the Welsh family for the passing of Charlie. He was a great man and with a golden heart. I am very sorry for your loss.

I am still in shock and in disbelief of Charlie’s passing. Charlie was not only our leader, but he was also a mentor and a good friend to me.

It will be difficult for all of us to adjust life without Charlie but one thing he emphasized when we had him on earth for a short period was the fact that hard work always pays off.

Thank you for being good to me and being a dear friend. Until we meet again someday, may your soul rest in peace.

I first met Charlie when my daughter Heather introduced him to me as her boss at the NYC Mergermarket office. My fondest memory of Charlie had to do with the unknown budding relationship Alex was developing with Heather. Alex would on occasion visit the NYC office from Toronto for meetings when Heather caught his eye. A long distance relationship became serious. Alex gathered up his courage to tell his brother he was dating someone in the office. Wanting to know who, Charlie rattled off every female employee except for Heather.. finally he said "Not my Heather?!" This kind of devotion he had for my daughter was the culmination of months of mentoring her to become the very best she could be. I will always love him for his dedication to Heather and her success. An extraordinary man to so many, in every aspect of his life, business, family and friends.
Be at peace dear Charlie.
We will hold you close to our hearts forever.
With love, Lisa and Rich

Londres, le Canada,New York ...

Charlie was such an inspiring person. I came to mergermarket late in my career still the place had more pluck and energy than most—all a reflection I believe of the person who founded it on the news side. You never felt oh we’re just mergermarket we can’t compete with the big dogs. To the contrary, the attitude was we’re mergermarket we can and must best them all. If you won his respect you felt you had arrived. It could be a brutally competitive place to work, but also where you formed wonderful friendships—all a reflection of his unique personality. It’s a huge loss for journalism as well as for his family and friends.

Heather

May 24, 2021

Charlie was my boss and mentor and then my brother-in-law.

As my boss, his energy inspired me to work such long hours I got to know the night janitor.

Some people went to the gym, but at the end of the workday he would change into athletic shorts and run home, dodging every pedestrian, ignoring every red light.

Charlie challenged convention and loved a good debate. I once said I thought Chinese food was salty for my taste and he countered that Japanese cuisine had even more sodium.

One overlooked fact is that he empowered many women, putting them in leadership positions across the globe before there were any mandates to do so.

As my brother, I’ll miss our long chats discussing B movies from the 90s and how he would always be waiting in person to pick us up from JFK. I’ll even miss how he would get lost on the drive back.

May you rest easy, Charlie. Thank you for always believing in me.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss.
Charlie and I, and Dawid, built the North American mergermarket team in the early days and it was quite an adventure.
Charlie could be infuriating but at the end of the day he was a real friend, loyal and inspiring.
I thank him for believing in me.
RIP

Charlie was a friend, mentor, and my biggest supporter – someone unforgettable who had a tremendous ongoing impact on my life.

Besides my father, I have never known someone that could bait me into a passionate argument and also be a lovable rogue, a faithful friend who would look out for your best interests and would never be afraid to tell it to you straight.

I will miss him terribly.

Charlie,
so many memories. You are the one that brought me over to the editorial team from research enabling me to fulfil my dream of becoming a journalist. You taught me how to deal with sources, colleagues, how to get the next story, how to understand our readers. He also taught me how to manage a team.
You have supported me all the way through and I can only be thankful. I remember also the fun part of the work: the gatherings at your house in Tooting and the one in NY. Our road trip to DC and the ride back where we stopped in Baltimore and you got a USD 500 fine for parking in the wrong spot! but also the weddings that we attended, and the stories talking over a cigar. I also remember (in fear) the emails that i would get from you when waking up in the morning. it was a warning to never rest on my laurels.
you will do good to people wherever you are

Charlie was an inspirational and visionary leader. He saw exactly what was wrong with business journalism in the 1990s and set about building an alternative from 2000 as the founder of a startup. It became wildly successful as the rest of the sector crashed and burned around it.

As well as seeing what was wrong and what needed to be done, Charlie was extremely driven. To describe him as hard-working would be an understatement! He also set high standards for his team, but was happy to let them work independently once he felt they were operating at the right level.

I am very grateful to him and will miss him. Rest in peace, Charlie!

Charlie is always so passionate about his work and he takes good care of everyone in the team. I remembered that I was timid in the beginning and was afraid of trying out new things, but Charlie always told me that "The only way to learn is to keep trying". He gave me a wonderful start in my career and taught me to speak up for myself.
I am grateful that I have crossed paths with such a great person who is full of life.

I first met Charlie about 15 years ago in NYC. He was everyone's boss', the founder of a great company that has influenced many lives, a true visionary, and a wonderful leader who inspired his people's confidence.

Charlie felt a great affinity with India: his grandparents had some connection with an indigo plantation and I could see how comfortable he felt here. To beat prime time traffic, in the bustling, sun-beating city of Mumbai, Charlie would jump on the back of a scooter. No chauffeur driven AC car was good enough for him...

In time, over his repeated trips to India, he became very close friends with my parents and my nani (grandma) and of course myself. Both Charlie and my nani had strong and fierce views about manufacturing, about the economy, about the production of scissors! They fought, they argued ... they loved each other deeply. When my nani passed, Charlie felt her loss deeply.

The only small comfort I can get from his passing is in this image: two soft chairs, round, comfortable. And Charlie and my nani seated, both wearing spectacles, both listening patiently but also gesticulating wildly as the other one talks. I imagine they will be drinking a hot cup of Indian tea, maybe a few biscuits. But the best of all, they will be happy:
happy to have found some intellectual stimulation and happy to be with each other.

May God in his mercy lend Charlie grace. May he rest in peace.

Such said news Heather and I'm sending heartfelt condolences to you and all the family and friends. I agree with all the beautiful sentiments expressed about Charlie. But, my best personal memory was when we had a ‘leads meeting’ in my house in Sydney in St Ives (the burbs) about 15 years ago and I had to get my kids from school, thinking that would be the end of my job, but Charlie was always understanding of working mothers and even had a chat to my girls – my older one ‘kind of’ remembers (haha), my younger one doesn’t. 15 years later and they are all grown up into beautiful, kind and capable young women, and thanks to Mergermarket and Charlie, I have been able to give them a decent home and good chance in life. Rest easy Charlie.

Charlie was an inspirational boss, mentor and friend. I've known him almost since the beginning of mergermarket where he was co-founder and grew the company with such genius. I have many fond memories - one is when a group of us were at his house in South London at the reporters convention - including trying to put the world to rights over a glass of wine until late into the night. Another was the huge breakfasts he always insisted we needed and would treat us to, before rounding us up to start work at the crack of dawn. When the US first went live on MM he told me he would be watching all night long with his popcorn. And he did. He was rightly proud as the company expanded globally and so successfully. He taught me many things including sometimes tough love in order to strive for perfection.

I can’t believe you’ve gone Charlie - RIP

My thoughts and prayers and deepest condolences go out to his family.

I always looked up to my big brother, his swagger. Like a street fighter he’d pretty much take on all comers. He didn’t wait around for anybody, ever. I almost had to run to keep up

I'm always going to remember my Uncle Charlie as an extremely determined and passionate person whom always strived for and cared deeply for his entire family. To know that we won't be greeted for a visit from his infectious smile, regale us with one of his many stories, or that I'll never again get another pep-talk about my future from him; there aren't words for how much all those who loved home will miss him.

Such sad news. I worked with Charlie for many years and he was an inspiration to so many people. The driving force behind Mergermarket in the early days, he had a ferocious work ethic, routinely sleeping on the floor of the office and telling us the first thing he did every morning was to ‘get an opp out’.

A remarkable man indeed and I send my deepest condolences to his family - so sorry for your loss.

My sincerest condolences to Charlie’s family and loved ones. Words cannot adequately describe the loss we all share.

Such a unique individual was Charlie that even though we haven’t had contact for a number of years, hardly a month went by without my thinking of something he did, said or especially, of an argument we both fought passionately and with mutual respect. He could challenge, encourage and infuriate you all in the space of an hour but he always left you feeling committed to be better and to develop skills you never knew you had. He had a special skill in picking winners - be it the business idea that became Mergermarket, employees that became superstars and friends, the journalistic scoops, or the right side of a debate.

I’m thankful for the memories! You will be dearly missed by all. Rest in Peace.

Dawid.

Charlie was a great mentor and everything I know about journalism and media is because of him. He gave me my first start as a journalist and I will always be grateful. I still remember back in Hong Kong, going out on team events with him, and grabbing coffee with him in New York. Charlie’s legacy lives on in all the journalists he inspired over the years. He’s built so many products, and given so many people their first start in this industry. He’s an entrepreneur, an innovator, an inspiring editor. RIP Charlie. Condolences to your family.

Love, Kimberly

I was glad to get together with Charlie a couple of times recently. As always, he was funny and thoughtful. His principles -- hard work, excellence and truth -- will carry on within us.

Charlie, my brother in law, I will miss him dearly. He definitely lived an interesting life. Charlie was always kind to me, and I will never forget his support of my art, family meant a lot to him. He always welcomed James and I and our kids with open arms to his house, such a generous human being. I loved listening to his stories which usually had a twist of humour. I am thankful to have many positive memories to hold on to. Rest In Peace Charlie XXOO

We were all shocked and upset to hear about Charlie.

I have emailed Charlie for many years now and he always talked with pride about his children and family. I have seen videos he has sent of the boys horse riding and playing baseball. We will always remember Charlie and his lovely smile. The last email I had was on 4th May. I shall treasure those emails from now on and we shall miss Charlie so much.

What terrible news to learn today. Last week I looked you up, Charlie. It was a question I had that I knew Charlie would know, or be best positioned to advise me how to find out - such was his zeal and phenomenal love for hunting knowledge and solving dislocations in actionable corporate scenarios.

It was a pleasure to meet Charlie and work with Charlie. His extraordinary intelligence and intellectual horsepower was staggering to behold, yet, he was always softly spoken. I remember him fondly since my work trajectory on a large part is thanks to his stunning innovations. Above all he was always kind and attentive as a colleague and never talked down at those who knew less than him.

I am sorry that we didn’t connect last week. But so grateful for company, in London and in New York.

I feel for his family and his beloved wife, children and siblings especially. Be proud that he literally changed the corporate world’s approach to knowledge execution, and managed to empower the lives of literally 100s of thousands of people if now millions who can make better decisions today in all corners globally thanks to his journey. Many families therefore have him and his intrepid founding colleagues to thank for their livelihoods as a result.

That’s quite a legacy!

Sorry for your loss, Welsh family. Be proud. He packed a lot in. Gone too too soon.

Sorry for your loss.

Dear Charlie

The image of you - every inch the Territorial - marching into an almost abandoned London office at 6am in May 2007 is still etched in my mind. The determination on display that morning was inspiring to this beginning reporter.

You were an expert in driving journalists to dig deep within themselves, put in that extra ‘phone call, send that additional email and produce top-notch copy.

Despite the at-times forbidding exterior, you were fair-minded and generous with praise, drawing on your immense experience to support younger writers. I am grateful for your counsel.

I wish you peace during your final journey, and hope your loved ones draw strength from your memory.

Charlie was always kind and accessible to the smallest of the small, despite his success and standing. He always had time for a chat or a meal, and ate with gusto whatever he was served. A big sign of respect in Asia!

He made it clear in words and actions that the journalists in far flung outposts mattered. And it made a huge difference to me, in my formative years, to be treated with respect and confidence by him.

Rest in Peace, Charlie. Thank you for your trust.

Charlie was a great boss, very insightful, and thought outside the box.
His achievement is well exemplified in having co-founded Mergermarket back in 1999. He didn't just build a successful publication spanning the globe. He changed people's lives and built a global family of friends.
Thank you Charlie for including me on that journey -- I learned a lot and it made me who I am today.
May you rest in peace while your legend lives on.
My condolences to the family.
Best regards
Freny

Charlie played such an important role in my life. He hired me when I was 22 and mentored me through the early stages of my career. I will always remember our evening routine of chatting over whiskey and cigars after dinner whenever he would visit. I already miss him dearly.

Condolences to Charlie’s family and friends.
I worked with Charlie for many years, and like all his former Mergermarket colleagues, I will remember him as an utterly unique and passionate man, that changed many of our lives through his hard work and achievements.
I trust he will be picking an argument (presumably about politics!) in heaven already. Then smoking a good cigar!
My thoughts are with all his loved ones.

All members of the Welsh Family in Glasgow were devastated at the news of Charlie’s untimely passing this week. While a student in London he was a regular visitor up here and we were all struck by his friendly nature and cheerful disposition. He and Emmanueelle even spent a weekend with us after the birth of their daughter, Rozenn. Since then we have kept in touch by email and marvelled at his success in the business world. Later we learned what a proud father he was with seemingly endless videos of his sons playing baseball, riding horses or playing the piano. More recently we communicated by FaceTime and continued to keep up to date with his new business venture. Since his early students we have managed only a few personal contacts but he did spend a couple of days in Glasgow a few years when he made contact with several of the family. He was a loving, kind, friendly, astute individual and we are all proud that he was a member of the extended Welsh Family.
Charlie, you will be sorely missed but never forgotten.

So sorry to have lost the opportunity to spend more time with Charlie& Em. I will always remember him for his intellect and generosity. Susan and I fondly recall a night on the town some years ago, where we enjoyed live theater on Broadway and dinner at one of Charlie’s favorite restaurants. God Bless you Charlie Welsh, as you continue your journey.

On one of our many visits to New York in the summertime, Charlie greeted us as we brought in our luggage from the car. Of course, he was just about to go for a bike ride and would be returning in a few hours. Charlie had recently gained US citizenship and was very proud of his new home and life he had built in New York. While I have to admit being a bit shocked by his "get-up", it was really no surprise. Charlie was always all-in. No holds barred. The whole family is in complete shock and without our fearless leader. What will we do now?

God bless you, bro! It will never be the same without you.
